In the civil war, the piping on the sleeve of the confederate general officer denoted what grade of general they were. It wasn’t that they had to memorize it. Confederate officer tanks of every grade from lt to general (they had full generals in the south not just lt generals) had their own piping on the sleeves of the uniforms. When you got to the 4 general grades the piping becoming important to distinguish a Brigadier General from say a Lieutenant General

Not true. Confederate general rank has a collar color with it.
