Surah Maryam is the 19th chapter of the Quran, consisting of 98 verses. It is named after Mary, mother of Jesus (Isa), and the Virgin Mary in Christian belief ¹. The chapter recounts the events leading up to the birth of Jesus, subject matter covered in Luke 1 of the Christian Bible . The text of the surah refers to many known prophetic figures, including Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Ishmael, Idris, Adam, Zechariah and Noah ¹. The surah is believed to have been revealed sooner than the later revelations in Medina and is an earlier "Meccan Surah" ¹.

The story of Maryam and her son is the topic of verses 16-27 ². Zacharias prays for offspring and Gabriel is sent with an answer promising a son. Zacharias asks for a sign which is given. John the Baptist's mission and character are described. The story of Mary's miraculous conception is told. The birth of Jesus is described. Mary in distress is comforted by Jesus. Mary brings her child to her people, who reproach her. Jesus (speaking in infancy) vindicates his mother and describes his own prophetic character. Jesus is referred to as "the Word of Truth" and it is stated that God has no son. The miserable fate of Jewish and Christian sectaries is described .
