6 months after incorporating this (introducing accents when playing single strokes, and any rudiment in general) into my practice routine :

this improved my playing A TON, even if i don't use accents that much in my playing, because it will dehandicap your weak hand real quick, and also make it easier for you to play stuff on the offbeat.
Now most beats/fills are way easier for me because of this.

The key is to introduce accents to your exercises, orchestrate around the kit, also do the same but switching left and right hands, etc.
And then you will also start to hear accents in many beats and be able to play them better (even if in reality you don't end up using lots of dynamic and just do full power all the time).

MASSIVE THANKS TO ROB (once again, learnt so much from you and improved so much thanks to you already in the past)

NB : i don't even do this exercise (fast single strokes full speed with accents) this way because i'm not that good yet, and yet doing it slow (and the way described above) already helps a ton.
I wish i had realized this sooner and did this sooner when i started playing drums !

Excellent video! I teach this my students. It's called the Grid. "By learning the Grid, you can then place an accent anywhere in the beat."
I teach it for sixteenth note patterns and eighth note triplets.
I teach them to concentrate on the ghost notes, not the accents. The reason being that "the accents are already there, you just have to play them in tempo."
I also progress the lessons as they get more proficient. My natural progression for them are first:
Accents, then Flams, then Diddles, and then Cheeses. I also teach them the same Grid sequence, but utilizing Paradiddle patterns, and Swiss Army Triplet patterns, with the same natural progression.
Great lesson, Sir!

Dear Rob, I've been practicing this exercise for 9 months. I always tried to play accented singles, but it sucked until recent time... now I'm really better and able to play this stuff around the kit and recommend doing the same exercise to my drummates. You are making incredible contribution to drumming around the world. Keep it up please!! Cheers from Russia

This exercise WORKS. I've made it my own by starting the exercises with my left hand transitioning from left to right, then after about 5 minutes I start the exercise with my right hand and then switche back and forth.

Rob, I'm 52 years old and bought my 11 year old daughter a drum set for Christmas last year. She hasn't yet taken an interest in it. I believe she is a little intimidated by them but, I sure have. I've subscribed to your channel and have been watching your beginner videos and love them. I bought a practice pad and take it to everywhere I go and use your videos to practice. You are definitely making it interesting and fun. I've been struggling with guitar for just over 10 years and decided to dedicate myself to learning drums. Jamming with my friends, I have noticed the drummers are having way more fun! I'm all in to learning to play! Keep posting new stuff.

Thanks Rob!

Within Drumeo there is "Emmanuelle's Beginner Pad Warm-up" which has most of these exercises within it and provides background music and synced sheet music to play along with. You can also adjust the speed. I have found it very helpful.

Thanks Rob! Was on the fence about joining Drumeo. 30 days free and cancel anytime? Yeah, sign me up. Where else can you go and have Simon Phillips as a teacher? Amazing.. Congrats on joining Drumeo family!

Some variations if you're so inclined:
1) Diddle the accents.
2) Flam the accents.
3) Cheese the accents (a flam before the diddle).
4) Turn the accents into a 16th note triplet (a single stroke four is it?)
These may or may not be beneficial for your single strokes but they make for a good control workout nonetheless. Just food for thought.
Thanks, as always, Rob. Happy 2023.

I’ve been doing this for a year. It’s my favourite exercise and I use it ALL the time. It’s also made a big difference in my playing. Thanks for posting!

You rock, Rob!❤

Your absolutely right Rob! I use the Stone Accents and Rebounds book and Master Studies but I double up on 32nd notes so it’s like the “Roll Over Beethoven “ snare part.

Appreciate the confirmation that my early 1990s marching band exercises weren’t a waste of time after all! This was our starting warmup, followed by the same idea but with each hand independently. Thanks!

Hey Rob, I commented about one or two months ago under another video. I finally started drumming in the end of august. My exercise without my teacher wasn't effektive, so now I decided to start with 30 minutes of paradiddles, double stroke rolls and stuff and THEN playing to music. I will use your video when I go to the rehearsal room later. Thank you so much!

I saw you touch on this before in an older video, but not as in depth. I think it was your video on developing killer hands. I took your advice about leaving practice pads around the house and it's been a game changer, my hands are finally developing noticeably. Playing singles at a fast tempo without accents is something I struggle with. By adding the accents and shifting them around I can get the speed up and maintain it, and it sounds WAY BETTER. Love this new video. You da man Rob.

I love the 20-minute triplet play-along man. it's so cool. Even a 10-minute 16th play-along would be great.

As always thanks Rob. Ive sent many a drummer to your site and got alot of positive response. Your tips have always been my philosopy. Being a basic traditional grip player for years. Starting back in 1962 and now 2023 my cymbals, my toms snare are moved in a way that works for me. Your right as far as doubles. Rob you have been always in logic.practice pad and set. RELAX And constant aware of that. My friends have said this guy is great. Thanks man.
