One thing that came to mind here, and why in certain fictions it made sense.

Full immersion VR in this case woukd make sense if you didn't move your body. There are safety concerns there definitely, but if you feel pain, you feel more of a need to move about. And that can be a hazard. Unless you have something specific to help with movement, or in a large space.
