As a kid my dad got a free ferret from a person from work and said he would take it because the coworker didn’t want it. While it was at the vet getting checked over we had her descented. We’d got a comfy sized cage for her but had to cover it up with chicken wire or she would keep on escaping ( this was at a time when pet stores carried little if anything for ferrets. But my dad was able to hand make a hide out box out of wood, a hammock from old dish towel, a litter box from a milk jug (and yes with some cat litter she was litter box trained) in her cage which made easy to clean up, for bedding we used old cutt up hand towels which she loved to use to sleep in, and finally when we told the vet that the pet store didn’t have ferret food he said to use dry cat food as they almost identical ( my ferret liked to eat the same brand as my cat did). My dad also made a couple of areas in the house where she could run around for hours and a couple times a month we’d fill up the bathtub with a few inches of warm water for her to play in which she would enjoy. Then we would rap her in full size towel until she was fully dried up, often with falling asleep while held her wrapped up in the towel. The last thing my dad made for her was a harness that we could clip on a lead rope to and take her out for walks and carried her home when she was tired. My family’s ferret provided over 9 years of happiness before she passed away. (FYI wild ferrets live about 4 years and domesticated ferrets live up to about 9 years). She was able to live a very long and happy life and we miss her to this very day.
