This is a very emoitional song for my mom, her grandma would sing this and my mom's mom wouldn't care for my mom, but mom's grandma did, so whenever mom hears this, she is reminded of her grandma. I'm so glad this wasn't about death or torture.

We learned about this in Louisiana history class I think 8th grade ( I graduated in 1997 a very long time ago )it was. written by Jimmie Davis the governor of Louisiana 1944-1948 and 1960-1964, is what we were taught. there are many conflicting stories on who wrote it.

That song is about giving up children for adoption at birth back in the day a lady would fall pregnant at a young age and be forced to give her child up and she only had minutes to spend with her new born baby… this was the song the lady wrote
