AUB Prophet’s Daughter & Husband Share Their Journey Out of Polygamy

In this powerful interview, Sam and Melissa sit down with Melanie and Cory, a couple who bravely left the polygamous AUB (Apostolic United Brethren) church. Melanie, the daughter of the current prophet of the AUB, shares her harrowing experience of being married as a child bride within the church, and how she found the courage to escape in adulthood.

In this emotional conversation, Melanie opens up about the pressure of growing up under her father's leadership, the challenges of living in a polygamous community, and the pain of breaking free from a coerced marriage. Cory shares his own perspectives and how they've built a new life after leaving the AUB.

I grew up in the AUB, but my great grand grandma was remarried to Owen Allred and she has told me “find out for yourself” don’t go where others make you go. So here I am out in the world finding out for myself still reading the scriptures tho.

I'm so glad Melanie put her children first. Due to endocrination, a lot of women who ended up in polygamous mariages think they can't leave and let their children be abused in the process. I admire Melanie (and Cory) for building such a healthy family culture

Sharing post immediately so others will know. Thanks for sharing today. Thankfully I had wonderful parents as an only child in sunny north Jacksonville Florida, back in the day. No to being a child bride, it was never discussed. They were not religious but my grandmother took me to the Baptist church. I never liked attending church, temples, shuls and synagogues. As a young woman, I went out on my own with my parents encouraging me along the the Ozarks drinking fresh spring water 💦 since 1991

Meri’s parents didn’t convert until Meri was 4 years old; Meri was their 6th child so when they married each other it was many years prior to becoming fundamentalists

Can you explain when going through the ceremony what made you feel uncomfortable? You are talking to people who already know but there are many of us out here who don't know what those uncomfortable experiences and rituals are.

I lived in the town right next to Pinesdale, Montana. My daughter and I were doing her nighttime drive for her drivers ed log and we drove up there. I had never been up there before. Wow, was it weird!! Obviously we were unknown to them and within 25 seconds of us turning onto the road, there were men watching us. I knew about the polygamy stuff but didn’t know anything about the cult of it before diving into this subject. I told her to find the nearest driveway that didn’t have someone walking down it and turn around and we got out of there as quickly as possible. We never went driving up there again, which is a shame because it is beautiful there.
