About 66 million years ago, a terrible extinction event wiped out the dinosaurs. But it wasn’t the only event of this kind -- extinctions of various severity have occurred throughout the Earth’s history -- and are still happening all around us today. Borths, D'Emic, and Pritchard give a quick history of mass extinctions.

Lesson by Borths, D'Emic, and Pritchard, animation by Juliette Marchand.

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.”
Albert Einstein's quote seems to become reality faster every day.

Not so fun fact: The Permian Extinction killed 96% of all life on Earth, and as such was named "The Great Dying." (Which is a badass name by the way.)

Ted ed has a big hand in making children love nature and in giving better knowledge, thank you ted ed for making videos like this. Honestly, you guys gave me a lot of knowledge.

The video covered previous mass extinctions, but didn't really answer the title question....

I love humans. We are so smart and capable we literally said screw nature and made civilization and that honestly fascinates me. What I hate about us, however, if how we are incapable of looking to the future. Those people littering or those idiots that don't believe in global warming can't see the big picture, and that's terrifying.

Why did the dinosaur cross the road?
Because the chicken joke wasn't invented yet.

Minute Earth did a video on how many mass extinctions there were just thirteen hours ago, and now Ted-Ed is doing this.  What's going on?  Are all the educational Youtube channels talking it over with each other?  Or do they just synch up like women's menstrual cycles?  How many minutes before the DNews episode on mass extinctions?  Or is it up already?

I actually find it amazing, that Man Kind is so intelligent, that we are able to change the world around us to fit our needs, but also intelligent enough to realize what we are doing wrong, and through analysis of other species and past species, we can figure out how to save the world around us.
