I’m a paramedic and we have F450s for our ambulance fleet, assuming they are chassis cabs but holy cow I swear those things can turn on a dime with the wider front axle. Very useful to have

Front axle in an f450 is called a Super sixty. Different shafts and yokes and u joints. Larger C’s brakes and hub units.
They share gears and that’s it.

In the simplest terms you have less payload with the F450. You do get a smaller turn radius with the F450. Insurance and license fees are also more on the F450. That is what i found when i compared the two trucks. For me the F350 wins. I can carry more payload. If you dont need the extra capacity and or need the better/smaller turning radius, (helps when backing a trailer up in tight spots) and dont mind the extra expenses, (I forgot to mention. Ford service and parts are more on a F450) then that might be the truck for you. Why you ask do they only rate the F450 at 14, 000 lbs. Because once you go over 14, 000 lbs you must have a CDL. When guying the F350 as a single rear wheel pay attention to the GVWR on the sticker on the door or window sticker. Ford sells the F350 SRW with 10, 000, 11, 000, 11, 500, 12, 000, and 12, 400 lb. GVWR ratings. Some eastern State only allow a 10, 000 lb. GVWR on non CDL trucks.

A BIG difference that needs to be addressed is INSURANCE.

Some insurance companies will not insure anything greater than a 1 ton truck, and you’ll need commercial insurance, regardless of use.

I haven’t towed with both but I have driven a lot of 350’s and 450’s and the ride is significantly worse in the 450. If you absolutely need a 450 then get one but if not I would stick with a 350 based on ride quality alone

That 1000 pounds is unsprung weight and Ford rated the F450 at 14000 because they didn’t want people to have to get a CDL to drive it. In reality, the F450 does NOT have less payload capacity than the F350. The F350 is a class 3 truck whereas the F450 is a class 4 truck. The F450 also has a bigger ring gear and bigger hubs. The 19.5 wheels and G rated tires also have much more load capacity than the E rated tires on the F350. There is not really a comparison. Once you have had both and towed with both, the difference is significant, especially braking and turning.

I'm confused. Everyone keeps saying the 450 weighs more than 1, 000# over 350... but when I spec'd the 350 with the same equipment as I spec'd the 450, the difference was 700# 🤷‍♂️

Can someone please clarify?

Didn’t mention the detuned engine in the 450. Or is that just in the 550?

you'll need a cdl the f450 is gvwr 14, 000-16, 500 that leaves you 12, 000-9, 500 of towing without going cdl thats useless in my eyes.
