Evolution of The Groke

Next up we have arguably one of the most famous characters in The Moomins, The Groke/Mårran/Mörkö.

Yeaaa, being born in 1989, I used to watch the 1990 version of Moomins, when I was a wee kid... and damn, everytime Groke came on the screen, I hid behind the couch... and I know that a lot of my friends did the same.

Even though the footage is the same, I feel like, for the Groke, there should be a seperate entry of the 90s show for the English/Finish version. The Japanese version in the video is as is, but when the footage was sent over for dubbing in English and Finish, the coloring was way darker. As a result, the Groke often was depicted as so dark she merged into the shadows, you could barely tell where her nose was, and her eyes and mouth were a near stark white. It was terrifying in a way that the Japanese coloring version can't quite compare to, being so much lighter, even though the footage is the same

I grew up with the 90's version of Moomin and I admit: for me, there was no monster scarier than the Groke (or Urr in my native language). I mean, a shadowy figure with such piercing gaze and creepy grin, plus the eerie music... What more do you need?


I was actually afraid, playing in my garden during winter's evenings that the Groke (Urr) might be sneaking around somewhere.

I watched the 90s version as a kid and still to this day I'm absolutely terrified of groke. That grin and the eerie music that plays when she shows up is pure nightmare fuel.
I think the scenes in this video aren't even the scariest. That episode where the moomins are waiting for her to arrive and Sniff (is that his name in English?) chickens out and tries to go home but groke is already behind the door and it zooms in on her face is forever burned into my mind, that was terrifying.
