Nothing like waiting for the activation. I used a few drops of dibromoethane. BTW this is the most wreckless technique I have ever seen. Set up a Claisen reactor and add the substrate via addition funnel.

@ChemistDrummer Iodine, Bromine, heat, you can use what you want.
You´d never isolate the Grignard Reagent as it is very moisture sensitive. Isolating it would mean losing a big party of your yield. And the Grignard is just an intermediate you use straight away for the next reaction, so isolating it would mean unnecessary work.

A very strange and dangerous way of preparing a Grignard reagent. Always use a three-neck flask, a dropping funnel and the correct Reflux cooler (Dimroth). If the alkyl halide is added to the magnesium all at once, a runaway reaction can easily occur and if the Ether boils too vigorously a lot of byphenyl is formed. This is definitely not university standard.

In Russia we use vessels with a separate inlet for inert gas, commonly argon, to prevent oxidation by air. However, the Grignard reaction can be carried out in a sample tube))

When I was doing that experiment we used some iodine as an activator, is there much difference? Also why don't we isolate the grignard reagent?

@ChemistDrummer Sorry, dumb question the second one, forget the part about isolation :P

The video show too many safety faults. Don't handle anything with a fumehood fully open (even though she points out it's done due to visibility), secure any flask to the condenser, don't stand and "swing" around the glassware while reaction take place, never use a clamp directly on a condensers outer wall. A pitty since it's rather pedagogical.

Again such bad and unsafe technique. Give the studensts some keck clamps to secure the rb flask to the condensor. Add the aryl halide dropwise to the magnesium. Do the same with addition of methyl benzoate to the Grignard reagent. Perform the reaction under an inert atmosphere.
