My name is Scott and Seven years ago I made the decision to live out of my 2015 Ram ProMaster City minivan. I did so because life became too expensive. I looked into getting more roommates and also looked at picking up another job or two, but those weren’t enticing options. The most appealing option was to stop paying rent and try vanlife.
So I set about deciding what I would need to be comfortable living out of a vehicle. In this video, we will look at the design and key items that I added to this little van. This is a very simple self built campervan. Nothing is difficult or complicated with the build-out. The last seven years have been about simplicity in minimalism. And the last seven years have been the most comfortable years of my life.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.
Please follow along as I document my journey.

I moved into my van in 2014 and have truely enjoyed the versatility of it. It has opened up opportunities that had not been possible before. I can try new or temporary jobs and don't have to sign a six month lease and put down deposits. I'm approaching nine years and still love it.

You either do this to travel and explore or save money.
1. Find 2/3 places to sleep ASAP.
2. Create a routine(shower, work, laundry, libraries, parks/lakes/beaches etc), place to buy coffee and food.
This establishes normalcy.
3. Treat yourself to a motel/hotel/airBNB 1-2 times a month to take a break.
4. Pack necessities and essentials ONLY in the vehicle.

I moved into my SUV last year and it’s amazing. Saved over 40k in a year.

I work 60-80hr weeks.
10/month at Panera for free coffee at all Panera breads.
Planet Fitness - 20/month.
I have 3 rest areas/truck stops I can rotate throughout the week/month that are 20 miles from both jobs.
Small storage unit(optional) but I keep my bikes etc in here.

Looking to go another 2-5 years, turn in my SUV and get a van(small one). I’m 28 and don’t want to slow down, haven’t had an issue dating either although, relationships don’t last long- they do enjoy taking adventures with me lol..
I’m a woman by the way(if this matters).

Once you go minimalist, you start to realize that you really don't need about 80% all the junk you are and have acquired throughout your lifetime. I think this is what gives it such as liberating feeling knowing, you don't have tons of junk cluttering up your mind. You can use that surplus brain power to enjoy life which what we were meant to do. You are forced to focus on the needs of today not about yesterday or tomorrow, just like it says in the Scriptures.

I'm now 65 and this wouldn't be an easy adjustment for me but I envy the people that live this lifestyle.

Home ownership isn't all it's cracked up to be with replacing roofs, septic systems, painting every few years, lawn and yard maintenance, furnace repair and fuel, plumbing issues, school and property taxes, home insurance etc....makes this way of life sound appealing.

I glad that you choose the right choice. Rent is getting so expensive and outrageous.

It's so nice to see someone who is happy with their way of life. It makes me feel happy just watching it.

I was age 60 when I realised my upcoming retirement looked to be one of poverty. So I ordered a 24' X 8' tiny house trailer and built a 2 level house on it. It has 2 upper bedrooms with 5'4' headroom (I'm less than that, so very comfortable), a living room, kitchenette, bathroom with a small bath and shower. There's a separate composting toilet too. I've been retired over 3 years and live on a farm, doing odd jobs in lieu of rent, power and WiFi. I keep an eye on the place when the owners are away too. I got rid of my car over 2 years ago and own 2 motorcycles, one large and the other small, for errands. I'm very happy and much better off than spending most of my pension on rent and other bills.

I think you've done a great job. You've looked at your needs and you've done your homework and you've paired down to exactly what it is that you enjoy and I think it's incredible that you're getting out from under The burdens of the increasing rent and just going on an adventure. Well done travel safely

Four years ago I had to let my home go because I couldn't afford it and help my spec needs daughter...
I moved into my Hyandai sp? Accent and have really benefited from it ... I moved in with a person I've worked for as a caregiver....that move was last August ...I may return to it.... Tough times may be ahead.... But I did surprisingly well at car camping

Happy anniversary! I’m nearly the same amount of time as yourself, but I’ve appreciated having you on here to share your experiences and help me to feel a little less alone on my own journey. Cheers ☕️

Aloha Scott - I don’t think I could be a nomad….all the more why I’ve come to admire & respect you. You have never glamorized van life, you keep your adventures real and your channel is a “what you see, is what you get” and I love that. You live a simple life on your own terms. Thank you for the adventures and for sharing your life’s journey with us. Don’t forget to eat a cookie after reading my comment 😂🤣

Ive thought a lot about doing this and decided I would not want a huge vehicle either. They are harder to drive in the wind and mountains, harder to park, and more expensive to drive and buy as you mentioned.

I have a large dog though so would have to go up one from the size you are in.

Yes, who needs sticks and bricks home when you live in California anyway. It is the best weather there.

Many do this life because they want to travel a lot and whats the point of owning or renting if you are never there anyway.

You are a big hit here with the public and your numbers seem to be rising fast so you have the IT factor needed. Reminds me of Steve Wallis on youtube who people just love to watch. He is over a million already. You and he both have such a calming effect on people. 👏

thanks for sharing.☕️Cheers!

I love my 2018 ProMaster City Wagon. I plan on making a simpler setup to yours to use in inclement weather and travel days. Once located, I want to use a large tent for everyday living.

I know what you mean. My late husband and I moved into the MH in 2004. I can't even remember what is was like to live in a 'sticks and bricks'.
