Blame it on the slime molds. And the Mongols.

There is no phase of a human’s lifetime that is as strange and disgus....er....magical as the transition from childhood into adulthood - that handful of years that we call . . . PUBERTY. Why does it happen? How does it work? Why is it so weird? Join Joe in this whirlwind tour of the endocrine system to find the answers.

So are you more of an awkward caterpillar or a beautiful butterfly?

"Ah, who am I kidding, your brain stays a mess, kids - you just get better at dealing with it" - The most profoundly true statement of the whole video :)

Speaking of the endocrine system, diabetics would love you (not that we don't already) if you did 11 minutes about diabetes. I knew nothing about it when I was diagnosed, and that seems to be the case for most people, so there's a lot of explaining to do when a problem comes up.

"your brain stays a mess. You just get better at dealing with it" is the most truthful quote I've heard in awhile.

This reminds me of the story of a women who due to an head injury/surgery did not age physically beyond 12 years and never entered puberty. Despite being now 26 years old. They removed part of the system that is being mentioned in this video.

3:30 Johnny isn't emotionally unstable. His mother is a sociopath who intentionally spilled soup on him, and he handled it with aplomb.

During puberty, in the summer I grew SEVEN INCHES!!!
My parents and I traveled every summer. And she had heard about boys growing fast if they travel during puberty. But she had no idea that it was even true, let alone just how much I would grow.
The growing pains that I had in my legs were so bad, I can remember the pain today.

I liked the name it's okay to be smart.

"It's Okay to be Smart" is a reassuring statement
"Be Smart" is a command

I only had one noticeably weird teen moment. I was already out of the house, working, driving, getting tattoos, then had one last growth spurt at 19 and racked my head on a truck rearview. I had grown another inch and a half out of nowhere 🤣

At 9:30 when he talks about frogs and rabbits being used for pregnancy tests, that made me think of a “dad joke” for Joe: “curiosity killed the cat, and an awful lot of rabbits.”

I honestly think the messiness of puberty proves that trans people aren't faking it/just confused. No one else would CHOOSE to practically through it twice

The fact this drops the same day as Ze's amoeba video is one of those zeitgeist coincidence things that's kinda neat and funny

Right now I can't afford to be a patron, but I have an original "Dad Joke" I came up with weeks ago, maybe you can share it with your friends. "When does a joke become a 'Dad Joke'?'" "When it becomes 'A-pparent it is not funny. '" Hope this brings someone a smile.

something I once read/heard...
when it all comes down to the basics
humans are really just
different coherent slime molds
that have grouped together for...
some reason

ps: I have passed andropause and let me tell you,
it is such a relief to not have those hormones raging.
things are just much simpler now

Question: if a hormone (melatonin) controls sleep, how does that work in cetaceans where only 1/2 of the brain sleeps at a time? Do they have a mechanism to block the hormone from 1/2 of their brain at a time? Do they use 2 different hormones? This could be very complicated.
