The beauty of Tool is everyone has a solo. The genius of Tool is that they all play them at the same time.

I love how he started the video not realizing he was about to watch one of the best drummers of all time

Guitarist here… not a drummer, not a TOOL fan…. I have watched this video 500 times

Fun fact: Tool doesn't use click tracks. Danny IS the metronome. Also he's 6'5" and passed up basketball for drumming.

The crazy thing, that I don't think the reactor realized: He wasn't just doing crazy fills and improvising a solo, and "having a little fun in that part right there."
He's playing the song as it's written. It's THAT complex. It sounds just like this on the album. Every hit it right on time.
He can get it perfect every time. Doesn't need 5 takes. Not only that, but it seems effortless to him.

DC is a master of polyrhythm. He is virtually an octopus and makes it look so relaxed and normal. A true artist.

With the loss of Neil Peart, Danny becomes probably the most proficiently technical drummer alive.

This drummer, Danny Carey, is now 60 years old and currently touring with Tool. It is absolutely insane that at 60 years old he's drumming without a break, songs that are 6 to 16 minutes long. Just had the privilege of seeing them live on Jan 16th in San Francisco, and I can say their show is centered around Danny and I believe he is the greatest drummer of all time when you throw in the fact he's a drumming composer, beats and rhythms no other drummer uses

I think with Danny, and this is from yeeeears of ardent listening and appreciation, is that most drummers/percussionists arent inherantly composers..and they merely look to fill an auditory void with clever tactics or an underlying beat that fits. Not only does he NOT write that way, he composes so that his writings fill the overarching song to the brim with wonder and amazing strike combos and time signatures....but his comps NEVER..ever feel crowded or "crammed in" 💯 Great job reviewing this live version of one of Tools masterpieces. Your level of understanding is something that can only come from years of study, dedication and playing at the highest of levels. And its people like you and Mr. Carrey who imact those of us out here who may play at varying skill levels, but all share the exact same love of the art!! 👏💯🔥

The entire album is a drum solo, and a masterpiece made by master musicians....

Cool quote I heard from Danny. “A good drummer doesn’t play beats, they play music”. When Danny plays, the percussion comes alive. His metronomic awareness is next level. His ability to drastically switch tempo mid song along with his prowess in polyrhythms and unconventional rhythms really set him apart from other drummers I’ve heard. Greatness, Certified!

Danny is a beast on a kit, and he was 58 when this was filmed.

One thing to note, you commented that "he's catching those lyrics great." It's actually the other way around. TOOL composes their music without Maynard (lead singer). Only when they feel the music is done do they call Maynard. Maynard then writes to what the music does to him.

I’d like to point just a few things out. The reason his hits match the lyrics so well, is their writing process. The music is written out and recorded to perfection before Maynard (the vocalist) comes into the studio to lay down lyrics that he builds as he listens to the music. And second the reason for Danny’s skill that seems rare in metal drummers is that he is a classically trained and educated jazz drummer. He’s taken the most sophisticated drumming techniques and applied them to a different genre of music. Love this reaction video definitely going to subscribe and watch more of your channel.

Danny has no "free flowing" drum solo's. Tool has to be the most regimented band I have ever heard. That part of the song is identical to the studio version. They just make it kick ass right from the initial stages of the song creation. They definitely do not stray from script.
