P.s. the lyric
"Change your name or change your mind"
Means that when she got divorced, She didn't want to change because thats how everyone remembered her

The story behind it is so sad. I got to meet her when I was around 9 years old, because my dad is contact with her husband. She was the sweetest woman. She passed away a few years ago. I’m so grateful for the music she left for us. She was truly a light in the world.

Edit: By her husband, I meant Jonathan, not Phil. :)

In the 1960s, Ronnie was a young woman in a music group called the Ronnettes. Her and the Ronnettes met a music producer named Phil Spector. They trusted him so he got them some fame. Phil has produced albums for The Beatles and those turned out pretty well, and so did the albums for The Ronnettes. During this time, Phil and Ronnie developed a relationship together and at first things were going great. But when Phil started producing bad album, after bad album, after bad album, he decided to retire. After his retirement, and The Ronnettes fading away, Phil got extremely depressed. He and Ronnie lived in a mansion together, and when Phil started getting depressed, he also got extremely controlling. He would have guard dogs outside of their mansion, and eventually confiscated her shoes so she couldn’t escape. But the thing is, during this time, they actually got married and adopted a son.
One Christmas morning, Phil thought it would be a good idea to gift Ronnie a pair of twins even though they already had an adopted son. Ronnie of course did not like the idea of the “ Christmas Kids “ ( hehe. Get it. That’s where Roar got the song title ) Apparently, according to Phil, the twins were supposed to be a way to fix their marriage. But of course, the twins didn’t work.
Phil also had a golden coffin with a glass lid and, he would threaten to display her corpse, if she ever tried to leave him.
And whenever she went out alone ( which was not that often ) she would have to drive with a live size doll, that looked exactly like Phil. Unfortunately, the children were not free from this torture either. They were locked in their rooms most of the time with buckets in the corners of their rooms used as toilets.
It’s now 1972, Ronnie has a small window to escape, and only a small window. With the help of her mother, Ronnie Spector successfully escaped that mansion of Hell.
She kept her last name as Spector to at least show a little respect for Phil for his work on getting the Ronnettes popular again for at least a little bit. After Ronnie escaped, Phil became even more depressed and more of a horrible person. And after she left, Ronnie was next to having nothing because she knew if she took anything from Phil, her life would be in jeopardy. After the divorce, Phil threatened to hire a hit man to find and hurt Ronnie or pull a gun to her head if she didn’t allow him to have full custody of their kids. Phil was so pathetic that he barred the Ronnettes from being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Even though he did do this, in 2007 The Ronnettes were added to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Eventually, The Ronnettes sued him for all that they were worth. Phil ended up having to pay Ronnie 1 million dollars after their trial.
By the way, Ronnie Spector should NOT be remembered for her unfortunate personal life, but her amazing music career. She was a rock icon and The Ronnettes were amazing too. She was a role model for young women in the 1960s and she should definitely not be remembered as “ Phil Spector's ex wife “
And may Ronnie Spector rest in peace.

( and btw, The Ronnettes music is really good too )

"I'm leaving Phil, I'm leaving now; I'm going to escape but you won't know how--or where to find me when I'm gone. I'll drink myself to death inside this prison cell. This prison cell"

That's actually really scary ngl.

“Ronnette my dear don’t ever disappear”

“And leave this fucked up place behind”

Yeah the kids
Don't forget she couldn't leave her home like at all
She was allowed to leave for her time of the month items once a month and had a bodyguard glued to her when she did leave
There were barbed wire fences, cameras, guard dogs, and
A coffin in the basement as a threat to Ronnie from Phil
He was threatening to have her killed if she left

Ronnie and Phil both adopted one child together, whereas on Christmas day, Ronnie was gifted with a pair of twins from Phil himself. She never gave the okay, and the children were also locked in their rooms with buckets as toilets.

The fact that the lyrics are 'you'll change your name, and change your mind and leave this fucked up place behind, but ill know ' is pretty close to this story
