I kept one desktop for Windows 10 for programs I am sure won't run in Linux and have Linux operating systems on my old laptop and desktop. If you are just viewing videos, getting on a browser, looking at pdf files, and generating a small amount of documents or spreadsheets the Linux operating system works well. The only problem I have had in Linux is getting network printers to print properly. You have to download the printer drivers for Linux from the printer manufacturer and follow the instructions. I think documents would print better though if the printer was attached to the computer.

Peppermint OS is a great starting and go to distro. I went through 7 distros before settling on it

You can also try any Linux distro with distrotest.net. This website allows you to test distros thorough a vm that runs through your browser, as the vm itself is being run on the website's own server, so you do not need to worry about your computer not being fast enough to run a Linux vm. Note: don't think an operating is slow an buggy when testing it with this site, all websites run slow using it. You should only use it to test a distro's features.

Kubuntu is a great distro for Windows 10 users since it features a modern interface.

You can also try Linux distros online on some website.

You do NOT even need to install it.

Some may agree, while others may not, but I think a good thing for a person interested in Linux to do is look up videos on Youtube for different distrobutions and see if there is one they may be interested in trying. This channel and MANY others have great videos showing their look and feel. Once they are interested in one, I would suggest either burning a CD/DVD or use a virtual machine, if they are able to. Linux is a great and FREE operating system. In my opinion you don't BUY linux, you donate to it. Linux is a great FREE alternative to the Windows and MacOS operating systems. One of the wonderful things about youtube is all the helpful 'How to...." videos for those who need them.

instead of dual booting, you can install on a whole new drive (hhd/ssd) for said gnu/linux distro.
then swap out drives when you want/need to use the other OS (windows).

Using VLC you even don't need media codecs on any OS.

how do i get my printer to work if it doesn't autodetect and install the drivers? I found drivers for an alternative printer that is the same print engine under the bonnet and downloaded the .deb package. 31 dependecies installed on mint when i opened the folder. But still no printing. From what i have tried to research i would have to get to grips with C.U.P.S. which was originally apple system and has a universal driver approach.

For the time being I set up a second computer and use nomachine to remote into it from my windows system so I can play with Linux. Eventually my plan is to get as kvm switch so I can get a better experience.

1. Before migration (not just switching) one must be educated+trained on libre office, media players like Clementine, rhythm box etc. I haven't found videos that explains libre from scratch. Also there are few distro specific content that educate what the distro is & what it does offer to user.

2 . In Windows, say music files, you can edit, modify song detail by clicking on properties tab itself which linux doesn't offer. Easytag is one application but it's not so great.

3. Youtube downloading app should be introduced to one going to linux. I recommend clipgrab.
4. Gimp is horrible! It's scary, repelling. Hard fact. There are large number of windows alternative apps but most are pain to use.
5. When I connect my android phone to my linux laptop, I cannot see the images stored on phone on laptop screen. I've to move them to laptop to view..
6. AV softwares I don't use so I can't comment on that.
7. If these things are explained, it'd easier to switch to linux & stay free forever.

Thank you for your videos.
Could you show how to use Porteous on an USB so that I can take this OS with me to use it with all my files to work on different PCs and laptops, even my very old Thinkpad T42.
The module feature sounds great.

I have a question. When permanently mounting an internal hard drive in a Debian/Ubuntu based OS, changing the fstab, I know you CAN mount it anywhere, but is there somewhere you SHOULD mount it? And why?

Some context:
I was running Foobar using Wine with music on a separate hard drive. It wouldn't monitor folders in the Media or Mnt folder, but it will work if the hard drive was mounted in the Home/User directory. Obviously with the way Wine works, it won't access above the Home directory in the tree.

One of my biggest fears/concerns about switching from Windows to Linux is terminal work. With Windows, rarely do I need to go to the command window anymore but it does happen. As a web site developer, would you think I would need to use terminal that often or would that mainly depend on the distro I'm using?

I wouldn't go back to Windows if you paid me. I am happy with my Linux setups and run them on two desktop PC's and a laptop.

Linux is great but I will always stick to using it in a server/enterprise environment.

Is there a way to handle MS WordArt in Libre Office Writer?
I installed the additional fonts so I have better compatibility with MS Word, but many of my documents have WordArt and they are a mess when I open them in Writer.
