Coronavirus outbreak: UK health minister warns of “tough” few weeks ahead

U.K. Health Minister Brian Hancock warned Thursday that the weeks ahead would be “tough” as the country worked to stem the spread of COVID-19, but said the government was not planning to shut down schools and universities because of the “huge social and economic cost.”

Hancock said there would be no clinical or epidemiological benefit to cancelling large public events as long as people undertake basic hygiene measures.

Canada's number is low due to lack of testing. All it takes is somebody positive taking public transit, so it's only a matter of time before we see local transmission. Our government dropped the ball not imposing mandatory 2 week isolation on all passengers coming from China/Italy/Japan/Iran. Our Prime Minister is more concerned being politically correct.

If you allow large public events and expect that the average person is going to take precautions they won't. They will assume because the event is held that it's safe to go. That's why they need to be cancelled to protect the public. Also governments should be pro-active not reactive -that's just irresponsible and dangerous.

Surely the science implies that more social interactions at a given venue with all those people going home to more people may increase the risk, even in the presence of good hygiene?? How bout government and business fat cats have a whip around and set up drive thru testing stations now and get a truer number of cases?
Would help the workforce and profits if it can be tackled sooner 🤷🏾‍♂️?
