Parasitized caterpillar
Показать описание
We found this wavy-lined heterocampo caterpillar that had been parasitzed by braconid wasps. The wasp larvae feed inside the caterpillar and then emerge to pupate underneath of it. The caterpillar also spins additional silk over the wasp cocoons and then stands guard and defend the cocoons from other parasitoids. It's likely the same virus that the female wasp infected the caterpillar with when she laid her eggs that then causes this bizarre behavior of the caterpillar.
