I have a MacBook and I have built a desktop PC (two of them now actually.) I use the MacBook for all of my personal information, email, web browsing, paying bills online, managing photos, video editing, etc.. I use the desktop PC's for gaming and heavy software development and rendering workloads. The MacBook is mobile with best in class battery life, and the PCs are powerful with expensive Nvidia and AMD GPUs -- yes I need to support them both! I can test my software on both MacOS and Windows - in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox browsers. And most important, if one machine develops a problem (it's always a PC) I still have a backup and my MacBook to help troubleshoot the problem. It's expensive, but I am a computing professional, and for me having multiple devices isn't just ideal - it's a necessity.

As a tech lead in a large org that uses a Mac M1 Pro for my daily, and a longtime builder of my personal PCs, the first one being a 1GHz AMD Thunderbird single core with a massive 512MB memory...

Look, I have an Epyc with 256GB memory in my homelab, among other machines. My personal machine is a 3900x Ryzen and runs rings around the Mac for development, despite being older, a bit of davinci resolve and gaming. It's not even close, especially considering the cost of a memory upgrade on both platforms. Half of its parts are from the previous system, and the previous parts plus some extras that I had lying around created the base of two new gaming machines for my kids.

But the Mac is pretty good at the development side and very portable with a long lasting battery. I could use some more memory, but the speed is OK. Also as a lead I'm in a lot of meetings and the battery lasts a good long while, meaning I can usually get through a full workday with only being plugged in for the time I'm actually at my desk and don't need a charging cable unless I'm in a full day meeting (Teams sucks the battery so hard).

Both operating systems suck relative to linux for just staying out of your way and letting you get things done, with the major issue being software compatibility.

I'll go windows over macos though, it feels too limiting and you need to download a bunch of software just to make for example window management not suck, which windows does fine out of the box. Its great when you use a single piece of software, or maybe 2, but at any one time I might need to switch between about 10 different programs, plus multiple browser windows with different tab setups for different focuses, and Mac is super clunky for this. Don't even get me started on its multi monitor support... I need a flippin displaylink dock and the buggy as shit software just to drive my Ultrawide at home, not to mention the displayport MST monitors that just work on decade old windows laptops but need a special dock to work for the Mac.

I use WSL2 on my desktop and as my vscode backend which puts me into a Linux env for development with the client software compatibility of windows, almost the perfect setup. For personal portability i have a Ryzen based Lenovo that has pretty good power and decent battery life (surprisingly against the Mac when toure actually being productive) and if I really need some heavy lifting done I can VPN into a VM on my Epyc... up to 32 cores and 200GB of memory can be mine at a few moments notice anywhere in the world, as long as I dont need high refresh rate display.

PC is my one and only choice, no matter what, there are so many use cases other than gaming, if you build a pc for a spesific work load it will beat the mac in that (Probably not the price[i have no idea what a mac costs]), i see no real use cases for macs other than traveling, most of my Productivity work loads run on a Server i build for them. also you can turn any old pc into a server if you need (energy costs may have to be taken into consideration), Performance also often depends on the operaiting system. all in all pcs can be repaird, have a longer lasting life, upgraded, reused, turned into replacement parts and much more for me there is no other choice than pc.

I have had three Macs, and I don't think I have ever needed to get it fixed. Whereas I have had to replace many parts on PC. Which is better then?

I have an intel core i5, 4 thunderbolt ports, 2019 touchbar macbook pro which is base model (8, 256). It still works. Have been using it since the end of 2019. Issue is when I have to do some windows based work I have no option. Now I am feeling that I need a desktop pc, while I also need a new macbook too, but if I have a good desktop setup, I cannot buy a mac immediately, even if I buy, should I buy a macbook pro or air (m series), these debate goes on and on. Seeking for your suggestion.

where are all the mac evangelists to shout about the ultimately perfect system and that you don't need a bulky PC under your desk? :D

If you want to play games DO NOT BUY A MAC you will not believe how many people have complained about mac on the basis of game compatibility. Linus, the pc guy himself has some arguments for mac, none of which is gaming.

Gaming PC for me is only for what we refer to it as. It's for gaming. My mac and apple products do everything else and these products perform tests much smoother and quicker than on the PC. Windows 11 runs better on my Macbook Pro on a VM than PC. I have both but I use mac much more.
