NASA’s Next-Generation Space Suits

Did you know NASA hasn’t updated their space suit design in over 30 YEARS? It’s becoming a major problem, especially since we are set to go back to the moon in 2026. NASA’s current space suits are called EMU’s or extravehicular mobility units. The ones you see in videos from the ISS are not only old, but aren’t made to walk on the moon. So NASA gave a company called Axiom Space $228M to develop brand new moon suits.

The goal of these suits is to fix some of the problems of the past. Specifically: They need to fit a wider range of body types, be more flexible, be repairable in orbit, and cost less.

We just got to visit Axiom Space and I am one of the only civilians to try on this suit… if you want to see that, watch our longer episode!

Remember space suits have to have all the functions of a spacecraft, with as much mobility as possible. Many of the falls in the Apollo astronauts had on the moon was from lack of suit flexibility.

Fun Fact: The suit she put on is black but will be changed to white because all space are designed to be least affected by the sun and white reflects sunlight. The final version won't be black but a light colour.

Fun fact: The Apollo-era spacesuits were stitched mostly by hand, and there were only a handful of women in the whole world who were talented and experienced enough to do it. The amount of labor going into each suit was unfathomable.
