The Art Of Drywall Knockdown Texture || E9 Finishing A Basement

In this DIY home improvement video series, I’ll be showing you the art of drywall knockdown texture to bare drywall. It took forever to finish the drywall, but I finally got it done. The drywall isn’t perfect, but luckily, the rest of my house has textured drywall so I will be applying texture to the drywall in the basement as well. The texture can easily cover up minor imperfections and can be easy to do following the instructions in my video. Let me show you how to build a room in the basement!

The first thing I’ll do is cover the floor with rosin paper and the doors and ceiling with plastic to protect it from primer and drywall texture overspray. Then I’ll use my Graco Magnum X5 Paint Sprayer to spray primer on the bare drywall walls. Applying primer on the walls before texture will ensure the texture looks the same on the seams as it does on the bare drywall. Next I’ll apply the texture. Start by preparing your texture gun and then mixing the texture. Then spray the texture compound on the walls. If it's a small room, like a bathroom, I’ll spray it all before stopping. By the time I’m done, I can start knocking it down with a knockdown knife. Once it's dry, I finish with another coat of primer. Now the wall is ready for paint!

Lots of great points in this video for beginners! Pro tip, don't spray in a back and forth motion, use a figure eight, loop-de-loo's, or something random that you're comfortable with. That way you don't end up with railroad tracks of heavy texture with thin texture in between. Also, priming before texture is a great idea if you have the time and you're doing it yourself. But, if you're hiring anything out, good luck trying to get a drywall contractor to coordinate with a painting contractor to do two coats of primer in between drywall finishing and painting. Lastly, always mix more texture than you think you'll need. If you run out of texture, you'll need to mix a new batch to exactly the same consistency which makes things difficult.

I'm in a hotel room right now in Fort Collins, CO... I was admiring the textured ceiling and was wondering how they did it... now I know. Thanks for sharing that.

Yeah that’s not what happened here pretty much at all, you didn’t show the part where you figured out you can’t screw drywall to foam board that’s just glued onto concrete. 😂 cute. So you came up with something. The question is what? Did you glue the drywall to the already glued on foam? Or did you try to use tapcon style concrete screws to go through the foam but at the same time blew straight through the drywall? Neither of which will work for any reasonable amount of time. Or did you just remove the foam and glue the drywall right on the concrete?
