Yes, so many things to get ready for winter. They spent their summers preparing for winter, storing feed for the animals and for the family, make sure the shelters are repaired if needed, winterizing certain gardens, fire wood, quilts to clean and mend or make. And aren’t we lucky with our insulated boots. On and on. Thanks, beautiful paintings.

While you was describing the winter scene I was literally hauling wood into the house in ice and snow. We heat with wood even now.

I wonder if people thought about Backwards Tricorn Hat Guy back then the way we think of Backward Baseball Cap Guys today.

The winterizing concept is a real thing. Ever since moving into a 5th Wheel (after apartments and rented homes), the reality of trying to winterize a place where the pipes can freeze, propane can run out, gardens need to be harvested and broken down for the season--even if it's a much smaller version than what they had to do in the past, is so far out of my element. It had been a real learning curve, for sure.

Such beautiful art! We were just at the Fennimore Museum in Cooperstown and saw some colonial/early federal art - that this channel helped me appreciate even more!

The canals of the Netherlands froze during the Little Ice Age (c. 1300 - c.1850) but rarely freeze nowadays.

I remember as a child going to some of those gatherings on rivers that were frozen over and on farm ponds that were frozen and the fun and fellowship that was enjoyed generally. The long walk home was the hard part because of the cold but we survived. Thanks for sharing with us. Stay safe Happy Holidays. Fred.

18:20 seems to be a Central or Eastern European household. She seems to be busy making Sauerkraut. Greetings from Berlin/Germany.

One thing I noticed in Alfred J Miller's work is the trappers and traders in the 1830s are not wearing coats made from buffalo or bear skin but of blankets. It's also interesting the tried to style them the same as eastern men's coats. They did wear a blanket hood but it seems from his work they wore it at other times.

Blessed Advent Season from Port Huron, Michigan, where it's 14°F or -10°C. I was happy to see that one of the neighborhood stray (or evicted or abandoned) cats found the shelter I hid in a bush. It's cold outside! I think those people might have brought the chickens inside in winter to keep them warm so they might continue to lay eggs. They probably just dealt with the droppings for the sake of having eggs.

There was a glove makers' guild. They didn't teach their techniques to the uninitiated. Muffs were easy to construct and did the job.
