LUMIX S5II X Review // Mindblowing Highlight Recovery

Once more Panasonic stepped up their game in terms of video focus hybrid cameras:
The Lumix S5 Mark II X. This camera records in ProRes, Raw over HDMI and really impressed me when it comes to dynamic range.

Thank you for this. Makes me excited for what BMD and Panasonic can bring to the L Mount.

wow, no one else mentioned the Braw limitations. Thanks for going over that. I've been on the s5iix for almost 2 months now and love it. I have been able to recover some INSANELY blown out live concert photos that were nearly all white and turned into some of my favourite photos yet oddly enough haha. Thanks for the video

Many thanks for your detailed review!
I own the original S5 and recently bought a Lumix S5 II and S5 IIx. Unfortunately I had to return both units, because they had exactly the same audio issue:
If you connect an external microphone via the jack audio input, there is a high frequency pulsating sound that doubles its frequency when you switch the frame rate from 25p to 50p. This annoying sound can only be heard very quietly, but it is disturbing in quiet passages during interviews, for example. And yes, it does not go away as soon as you hit record.

This is a step by step guide to reproduce the problem:
1. Set the camera to movie mode in a quiet room
2. Connect an external microphone to the Mic-Port (if it is a battery powered device, you can leave it switched off)
3. In the audio menu, set the „Sound Rec Gain Level“ to „Low“ (in „Standard“ the issue is less pronounced)
4. Set the Audio Level to Zero or + dB to emphasize the issue
5. Put your low impedance headphones on (e.g. EarPods) and note a pulsing high pitched interference sound
6. Press the lens lock/unlock button to make the sound disappear for some seconds
7. Toggle the Movie Recording Options from 25p to 50p to double the speed of the pulsing sound
8. Switch the dial “Movie Mode“ to Manual "M“ to hear the sound change it’s frequency

Please note: This interference do not occur using the onboard mics or the DMW-XLR1 unit.

In BRAW you can actually adjust ISO it just uses a different name: Exposure.

So shooting at ISO640 native gives you:
-2: ISO 160
-1: ISO 320
0: ISO 640
+1: ISO 1250
+2: ISO 2500

ISO4000 base:
-2: ISO 1000
-1: ISO 2000
0: ISO 4000
+1: ISO 8000
+2: ISO 16000

Keep in mind you'd need both over- and under-exposure luts for preview as well as shoot in native ISO for it to work and get the most DR out of camera, basically like shooting with Exposure index. ;)

You can also use highlight recovery as well, which extends dynamic range even further (+0.8 stops) in BRAW, that with the red gamut handling (no clipping) and much cleaner shadows without banding nor green tint as well as much better detail and texture really elevates the camera a lot and made it a game changer in its price class. :)

13:23 Well, the competition doesn't have 4K 60 uncropped either:-). I think that's more of a feature for the S1H II.

Been saying this since I got my hands on the S5iiX, BRAW with this literally transforms the camera completely! It's insane. Pocket 6K with IBIS, AF, good battery life. Got a test scene I shot with BRAW on my channel, video coming out maybe next week on the benefits of it. Eventually I'll work on a deep dive analysis video.

Regarding BRAW, this time on the S5ii/X, it actually is equivalent to the BMPCC cameras, except for the ISO setting - but the exposure slider works the same way and is doing a gain operation, just mathematically slightly different. For the other gamma controls on the right side, if you select any of the Blackmagic color spaces, you get access to all of those just like you would on a BMPCC.

I own the S5IIX and the SmallRig Black Mamba cage.. the camera is very well secured and doesn’t require a second 1/4" thread, since it uses the camera strap eyelets to completely secure it. It doesn’t move at all.

Thanks Paule for this video. I have to take a closer look at Panasonic. 😊

Nice review. I'm looking forward to them releasing a higher readout sensor or one with less megapixels focused more on video. Panasonic went from having the best rolling shutter performance due to smaller sensors to having the worst on the S series.

Thanks for the video. I still have the original S5. I shot a feature film on it, into the Ninja and was totally blown away by it, wonderful image and never missed a beat on a tough 25 day shoot. I don't feel the need to upgrade yet and I am wondering if the delay on the S1H II is due to the latest Sony going Global Shutter. Lumix uses Sony sensors, after all, maybe...S1H global shutter??? I might be tempted with that.

Very nice review and excellent camera. Panasonic nailed it again.
But since I dont need auto-focus I dont feel to upgrade from a Lumix S1H

The no internal pro-res thing is because of Apple. Panasonic wanted to make it record internal pro-res at 4k, but Apple said no. So Blackmagic is still you're only option. It's fine by me. If you're recording video files that big you're gonna need the speed and space of an external drive anyway, plus it keeps camera cooler that way.

Great video. I'm glad that you used the 24-105 for your tests. Have you also used it for your low light ISO test?

Excellent review! Very helpful real-world tests. My one question is, why is timecode so important for you? Are you often recording external audio? I am just curious if that is something I should also look for in a future upgrade.

Excellent review! Did you notice moire patterns on the s5ii due to the lack of AA filter to the sensor? And if so is it going to be a problem on professional work?

Great thorough overview, thank you! Inside of Resolve, which slider/module do you use to dial in exactly plus/minus 1EV (aka 1 stop of light)?

Nice vid! About the timecode, couldn’t you use an external timecode generator? Like the tentacle sync or similar devices

Hi Paule. When you talk about multi stop overexposure recovery, can you tell us which codec you used. I guess you use 10 bits o e and not braw, but is it internal 200-600 Mbits all I/LGop or external prores and is log activated. Well you know what I mean...
