There are multiple factors into why Sonic won't act on his feelings.
1) Amy's energy: when Amy gets into the scene first, she's very energetic towards him. Sonic is clearly uncomfortable with that. When she calms down, however, Sonic engages more with Amy.
2) Sonic's value of freedom: Sonic likes to be free, but Amy's presence seems seems to be encroaching on that. If Sonic comes to the realization that a relationship with Amy will minimally encroach on his freedom, he may engage.
3) Eggman's danger: When Sonic first met Amy, she was taken by one of Eggman's robots (Metal). She had been held hostage multiple times by Eggman, because he wanted to get to Sonic. Sonic knows this and has seen some significant deaths near others. Most notably, Maria, close to Shadow. Sonic doesn't want a death happening close to him, let alone Amy. He absolutely doesn't want Amy to get hurt and thus leaving him with an emotional baggage. Engaging in a relationship with Amy will paint a massive target on her back and he knows that. So, for Amy's sake and his own, he keeps and appropriate distance to her, even if he wants to be closer to Amy.

I don’t think that a relationship with her would slow him down. In a game, Amy states that she wants to be like Sonic, and she has trained to better herself and achieve that as stated in Sonic Battle ( hence why she grew faster and stronger over time ).

She has gone so far as to build up her own Team ( Team Rose ) and, in Sonic Adventure 1, she missed Sonic also because of the adventuring ( directly mentioned ).

If anything, Amy could easily be a complement to Sonic in his adventures. She had demonstrated to be the emphatic one of the cast in both Sonic Adventure 1 ( Helping Gamma and saving him from Sonic and helping the Flickie, which Sonic ignored ) and Sonic Adventure 2 ( changing Shadow’s world view ).

So, if Tails can go with Sonic as his best friend and not hold him back, I don’t see why Amy can’t go with him as his girlfriend and not hold him back.

Let’s not forget that the girl saved Sonic’s life from Silver in Sonic 2006 and was the one who rescued him from Prison Island in Sonic Adventure 2.

The potential for it to work is there. It’s only a matter of willingness to try.

I think they're mostly friends but it's clear Sonic has a soft spot for Amy. I think there is potential for something more but I doubt SEGA would go there. But let's be honest, Amy is the closest thing Sonic has to a love interest nowadays.

I always remember the episode of Sonic X where Amy made Sonic a shell bracelet to help him get over the anxiety of being in the ocean and it got broken by Eggman’s minion, then Sonic secretly managed to repair it again and wore it at the end of the episode, that always kinda indicated some form of affection to me!

This video is a shining example of why SonAmy is such a popular ship in the first place; it’s ambiguous and open to interpretation. Whatever side you’re on, there’s plenty of evidence to back it up.

Personally I think Evan Stanley hit the nail on the head. Sonic DOES seem to like-like Amy but, since he’s not known for being open with his emotions, he’s not gonna admit it any time soon.

I feel like, SonAmy is super toned down in the English games. However, In Japan, they’re kinda a thing. There are so many things that we don’t completely understand about their character and relationship, because in America everything is super toned down.

Consider them a Pucca x Garu situation. Garu does like Pucca, but he’s very shy about it. There are moments when he’s showing his feelings in the show.

Same goes for Sonic. I’m sure Sonic does have romantic feelings for Amy, but he’s probably too shy, or doesn’t really know how to act on it. He did accept a date offer from Amy in Unleashed and actually went through with it in the Black Knight game

I think a perfect example of Sonic liking Amy is evident in Sonic X.

1. When Sonic was against Amy in the tournament, He didn't want to hurt Amy. He even asked Chris to say something that'll get her to attack him.

2. In the last season when they had a party, Amy's dress was so good that it captivated Sonic. Even though he said she looks alright, he still couldn't take his eyes off her.

3. When Amy was in the water after destroying Eggman's robot, Sonic risked his life to save her even though he couldn't swim. Not to mention, he actually took her lucky charms even though Amy thought Sonic didn't have it.

These 3 examples alone shows why Sonic actually does like Amy but like Evan said, he's just too shy to actually tell her.

I honestly compare them to Rouge and Knuckles because even though Knuckles doesn't really love Rouge like that, he still cares for her well being and Rouge appreciates it.

The best example is Sonic Forces where Rouge pushes Knuckles but Knuckles never got angry at her. You could say he became mature but then again he's still gullible, just somehow worse lol.

I'm not the type of person who likes to ship characters, but if someone asks me what ship makes the most sense to me I'd say sonamy.

I always hear people saying things like "Sonic isn't shy" "he will never be shy" "that isn't his thing" "he's a very vocal and confident guy and he just wouldn't".



Yes, I get it, Sonic is like the exact opposite of shy. But I think when it comes to the topic of romance or love he just gets shy because that isn't his thing and he just isn't used to it.

SEGA themselves literally stated that he does love her secretly but wouldn't admit it, because he's too shy about it.



I found this on the SonAmy channel, and it stated;



“Naoto Ohshima is Sonic’s and Amy’s co-creator and one of the founding fathers of Sonic Team. He stated on Twitter that he loves Sonamy and explained that Sonic is immature with a boy’s heart. He concluded his post by saying that Sonic would choose Amy Rose if he matures with an adult heart”.



So yeah. Is SonAmy canon? No. Like the video had stated. But they BOTH do indeed have feelings for each other. Amy's really expressive and vocal about hers, and Sonic just closets his. Will SonAmy be canon? I doubt it. But let's be honest, Amy is the closest and only one to being a love interest for Sonic.

Speaking as someone who does enjoy SonAmy, I think a good argument could be made for both sides.

You could easily make an argument that Sonic only sees Amy as a friend, and gets quite annoyed when she starts making advances. But there’s also several instances where you can make an argument that he might have some deeper feelings for her.

Personally I enjoy the ambiguousness of the relationship. It allows the audience to make their own conclusions. If you think sonic should remain an adventurer who doesn’t need romance, you can interpret it as that. While at the same time if you like the idea of sonic having a significant other you can interpret it that way.

i personally really like sonamy. but not as a relationship.
i like sonamys where they like each other, but nothing really changes. thats the magic between it all. not sonic being all romantic, but running away from amy, yet always being there right at the time she needs him. i like when sonic accepts it but doesnt show it. i like it when amy loves sonic but is also extremely independent when its go time.
sonamy isn't perfect, but it's something that i really do love :)

In Sonic Frontiers Sonic says “Wish we were sharing an umbrella Amy.” Which I think is really sweet and can be seen as both platonic and romantic. To be honest I’m fine with both because I see Sonic and Amy as being friends with crushes on each other. I also found this on the Internet.
Fun fact: Sharing an umbrella as a couple in Japan is considered a romantic expression, and teens often draw an umbrella with their name and the name of their crush, the way one would in a heart.
