Great to see this in the curriculum. Have you thought about approaching this topic from an engineering perspective and starting with a statics or dynamics problem then moving to the method. Forces in a truss bridge for example, like the Iron Cove bridge.

The order that 'made sense' for me was (a+c+b/2)+b/2. The parenthesized bit is 0, leaving b/2 as the resultant.
