What is spinal stenosis and how is it treated?

Spinal stenosis occurs when the normal wear-and-tear effects of aging lead to narrowing of the spinal canal.
Degenerative changes of the spine are seen in up to 95 percent of people by the age of 50. Arthritis is the most common cause of spinal stenosis.
Nonsurgical treatments include:
• Exercise and physical therapy
• Lumbar traction
• Anti-inflammatories
• Steroid injections
Spinal surgery may be recommended for someone whose pain and disability isn’t relieved by these treatments.
