As a middle school math teacher, I want to do everything possible to protect my students. As a black man, in America. I REFUSE to come to school with a gun. God forbid there is an active shooter and then the cops come in and see me with my weapon. Yeah, I can already see the headlines “Cops shoot armed teacher!” And the comments “He should have dropped the gun and complied!” Yeah, no. I will pass!

Apparently some folks haven't been in an elementary school since they left elementary school! Why can't America just make a common sense plan on how to implement better guidelines on 18 yr olds purchasing a gun? No one wants to take away the right to own a firearm, but to imagine a parent having to identify their 9 yr olds remains and only her shoes were left as evidence of her ever existing is BEYOND what any parent should have to go through. America can't have more compassion for bringing unborn lives into this world, and not give a about the children who are already here! There has got to be a middle ground for solving this problem.

As a former public school teacher, I would not have wanted to be armed. I don’t want to learn to shoot. I would hate to see a kid get should of my gun in a moment of letting my guard down. I never got paid enough to to have that kind of stress added to my day. Be kind to your kids teachers whenever possible. They are in a combat zone now and they deserve Combat pay.

This video is not a red flag- it's a goddamn nuclear bomb. It's disguising how little we pay our teachers to guide our children and now we need them to literally lay down their lives for the having a shitty paying job that gets no respect, yet it's the most important responsibility anyone can have- they are trusted with our children, our future. How about actually saving children and stop worrying about zygotes. This country is fucked.

Teachers are not Police officers or soldiers, they are there to educate kids. There needs to be proactive steps because reacting is not working. I don't own guns, but I am not against law abiding citizens having them. There must be some middle ground that both sides can agree on.

There are probably lobbyists who have taken their contracts to politicians to remind them that gun owners need access to buy any gun they want, so I am skeptical that there will be changes. Even having a nationwide access to a list of people who have been rejected from buying guns and a longer wait time would help. Noticing when people are buying an unusual amount of ammo, could help too.

The police who get huge amounts of the budget, have body armor, have their own assault weapons, and training, don't want to confront a guy with an assault rifle, why are teachers expected to?

This issue in America can be solved very easily. PROPER GUN LAWS. Full back ground checks and all guns must be registered and licenced and the Gun Owner/Shooter must be licenced as well. People must be of good character and of sound mind. Raise the age of gun ownership to 21, and just ban the bloody AR-15, Semi's, high calibre rifles etc. No one needs military style weapons on the streets. Just look at the rest of the World that has plenty of guns but no mass shootings and way less gun deaths than America.

I get that they’re trying to come up with ways to prevent lives from being taken but if the shooter is a student of the school wouldn’t it be pointless since he/she would know where everyone would be hiding?

Teachers deserve more. They do so much and get paid so little. A US senator makes $172k for ruining a country. Maybe teachers should be paid 6 figures instead of senators.

im a teacher of 4 to 5 year olds and one of the kids on our first lockdown drill knelt down, immediately whipping his head up towards me with these piercing, innocent eyes and face of pure horror, tears filling his pupils, i felt like he was looking into my soul and asking with his little voice "why????" i almost started crying. i tried to show him a brave face but honestly, i was terrified too. its my first year so i didnt know what to tell him. how to comfort him. what do you even say? its not like i can protect all of them every second of every minute. but i have to. i hope they never have to experience a real lockdown, but deep down i know theres no guarantee. that gives you incredible unrelenting guilt. you want to be a superhero, but youre just human.
