The United States celebrated the success of The AMR Challenge in September 2019 during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York City, having received since its 2018 inception nearly 350 commitments from 32 countries to implement specific actions to combat antibiotic resistance (also antimicrobial resistance or AMR). Led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The AMR Challenge is one of the most ambitious global initiatives to date to combat the growing threat of antibiotic resistance—when germs no longer respond to the drugs designed to kill them. The event’s speakers included: Madlen Davies (Journalist and Emcee), Alex Azar (Secretary, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), Juan Pablo Uribe Restrepo (Colombian Minister of Health and Social Protection), David Ricci (AMR Survivor), Poonam Khetrapal Singh (Regional Director, World Health Organization South-East Asia Region), and Dame Sally Davies (England’s Chief Medical Officer).
