MESSI - THE FALSE NINE | THE EVOLUTION OF LIONEL MESSI

The evolution of Lionel Messi from the ultimate wonderkid to world class star. Messi started life at Barcelona as a winger, then was moved to play as a striker by Pep Guardiola. Messi played this new role as a false Nine. Messi went on to win the Champions League in 2009 and 2011 as a false nine winning the Ballon d'Or in both seasons.

Messi's goals and assists as a false nine at Barcelona were ridiculous scoring or assisting a goal on average every 67 minutes.

This is a tactical analysis of Messi's transformation from inside forward to goal scoring machine. I look at the comparison between traditional wingers and wingers at Barcelona and then compare the difference of a number nine to a false nine.

Episode three of DAVE TALKS TACTICS, the weekly show where Dave dives into tactics from European Football, takes a look at the first two stages of Messi's evolution to world star.

So Dave, how would one tactically or theoretically stop this Messi-False 9 system?

Hey Dave, I think that Messi probably was directly involved in a goal more often than every 67 minutes... Which is even scarier!!! I think you got that number by just going 90 minutes / 1.34 right? But you aren't really accounting for games where he doesn't play 90 minutes due to being subbed off (big leads etc...) I'm not sure how often this would have happened, and I mean it's not realistic to expect you to account for this, but just the thought though is kind of hilarious.

So does Messi go down as a false nine or a right winger when all is said and done?
