It's never too early to get ahead with your Christmas baking, and mincemeat is the perfect place to start. This vegetarian mincemeat uses butter instead of suet so that everyone can enjoy the mince pies and other bakes that will result from this traditional mix of dried fruit and loads of brandy.

It's best to make your mincemeat ahead of time so that it has time to age before using in your favourite recipe. This mincemeat can be safely stored in the fridge for six weeks, but even if you need to use it within a few days it'll still be delicious!

Mixed Spice
• 1 tsp ginger
• 1 tsp Cloves
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1 tsp nutmeg
• 1 tsp allspice
225 gr sugar
100 gr butter
225 gr brandy
75 gr chopped almonds
½ tsp cinnamon
1 heaping tsp mixed spice
Zest of 1 orange
1 green apple, peeled and finely chopped

I have just made this following your recipe. The only things I swapped were the raisins for cranberries, and added a star anise while cooking. It's so tasty!!

Hmmm! No beef? I dont remember my mother making minced meat filling so fast. I remember her taking 1/2 a day to make the filling and i could have sworn she used a type of molasses. I was 9 yo and I could remember smelling it across the farm.

I'd like to try this sometime. Usually no one ever eats mince pie here in America so most places don't sell it, as far as I know. I like historical recipes so I'd like to add some suet (which would probably have to bought online or from a butcher because majority American tastes :/ ) and maybe a little beef tongue too.

My mom added pork loin finely chopped and she chopped the fruit. She used a food processor. No brandy. And all fruit was dried. Peaches plums and apricots, very little raisins. And apples.

Is the heaped teaspoon of Mixed Spice from the mixture you made at the very beginning of this video, but you still need the additional half teaspoonful of Cinnamon as well? Also, how long do you need to let it sit for to soak up if not all, then at least most of the Brandy and Syrup? Thank you.
