Abkhazia is a self-governing territory, a de facto state that is relatively stable and certainly not on the verge of collapse. However, it is internationally isolated with its main route to the world going through Russia.

The most interesting part of the approach outlined by Mr. de Waal is how the role and weight of Russia is either downplayed or completely ignored when it comes to Abkhazia's current situation.The main problem here isn't that ''Georgians insist on international isolation of Abkhazia'' (what a surprise after ethnic cleansing...) but that it's the Abkhazs who refuse to try to find common ground on which to build a future relationship with Tbilisi. The Abkhazs look at their future not through the prism of what might be better for their new generations but through the prism of hating Georgians and everything Georgian. They're building an ethnocracy based on Georgia-hatred. It's the Abkhazs who refuse to even talk to the thousands of Georgian IDPs brutally expelled from their homes, or to end human rights violations against the remaining ethnic Georgian population in Gali district etc. And then they complain being legitimately isolated by Georgia, voilà!

P.S. it's either a naive wishful thinking (often so much prevalent among Western experts) or a deliberate attempt to downgrade the role Russia's illegal military occupation plays in Abkhazia's current isolation. If you wanna ''deisolate'' Abkhazia, first go and talk to Russia's political establishment about military withdrawal and then come and blame Georgians for belated offers. You're barking up the wrong tree, buddies.

Очень и очень поверхностно! Вы понятие не имеете через что абхазы прошли с 1931 по 1993 годы, во времена грузинской оккупаций Абхазий! Все так называемые беженцы - это те кем заселяли Абхазию Сталин-Шеварднадзе! Это люди которые с оружием в руках воевали против абхазов в 1992-1993 годах! Никогда Абхазия не станет частью Грузий!!! Даже не мечтайте!
