Another basic history time. Name Abkhazia got its first name "Apkha-zan-eti" from one of the most ancient Caucasian languages, Svanetian; "Apkha" was a figurative word by Svanetians to describe mountains, "Zan" is an ancient name for the Megrelian people which are western Georgian groups descended from Colhicians, and "eti" is a grammatical word that essentially means "land of ...."

So combining Apkha-zan-eti you get a translation from Old Svanetian to English that says "Land of the Mountain Megrelians."

We make fun of Svanetians for being "dumb" but in the end their language holds true ancient secrets of the western caucasus.
