Cyclopia, a rare congenital disorder characterized by the presence of a single eye in the center of the forehead, does occur in humans, although it is extremely uncommon. This condition, which falls under the broader category of holoprosencephaly, results from severe abnormalities in early embryonic development.

Developmental Anomaly: Cyclopia occurs during the early stages of embryonic development when the brain and facial structures are forming. Normally, the brain divides into two hemispheres, and the face develops two distinct eye orbits. In cyclopia, this division fails, leading to the formation of a single central eye or a partially divided eye. This condition is often accompanied by other severe craniofacial abnormalities, such as a proboscis (a tubular, nose-like structure) located above the eye.

Genetic and Environmental Causes: The exact causes of cyclopia are not fully understood, but it is believed to result from a combination of genetic mutations and environmental factors. Disruptions in specific signaling pathways that regulate brain and facial development can lead to holoprosencephaly and cyclopia. Potential environmental factors include maternal diabetes, alcohol consumption during pregnancy, consanguinity and exposure to certain teratogens (agents that cause developmental abnormalities).

Sadly, genetic anomalies happen. I had a baby girl who I discovered at my 20 week ultrasound, had a complete Pentalogy of Cantrell along with a heart defect that a world renowned hospital told me they wouldnt even attempt to operate on if I had carried to term, they gave her a 100% mortality rate. As I was working in healthcare at the time in complex and palliative care, I made the heart breaking decision to interrupt my pregnancy.
If anyone decides to Google Pentalogy of Cantrell, be warned, it is also disturbing to see and they dont know why it happens, it just can happen. 💝

My aunt was pressured by family to give birth to a baby who was not compatible with life. No brain. No heart. Then those same people got mad at her for falling into a deep depression and didn't get her help.

Just a reminder that doing an abortion out of mercy is valid. No it's not bait and I won't argue with anyone. These babies unfortunately don't live past 13hrs so it should be the mothers choice to abort or not. It's not the governments or anyone else's business. Oh and I don't want to hear the "but this is what God wants" BS either.

Also remember it’s not just about the child. Pregnancy and childbirth are not risk free. In addition, the emotional trauma of continuing a pregnancy for any length of time knowing your child will not survive is i’m sure unreal.

I can't imagine the amount of pain a child with such conditions would be feeling in their short life on Earth. How is that humane? To let someone birth a child they KNOW isn't going to last long AND is also going to be in immense pain in that small time? That is so much crueler in my mind

Thank you so much for posting this. My son died because he had trisomy 18, and I’ve talked to so many people who don’t understand (no matter how many times I explain it to them) that medically nonviable pregnancies exist.

I'm a conservative a Christian and a mother who had two daughters pass away. One daughter was born at 22 weeks and of course did not make it. It's really super easy for everyone to say every baby should be brought to term. And some people choose to do that and that's their decision and it should be respected. But parents who choose not to should also be respected and given their privacy without judgment. Babies who are 100% not compatible with Life will only suffer during birth and after until the baby will pass anyway. That's a personal choice whatever my view is. When I was younger I would most definitely have said all babies should be carried to term. Now in my 60s I have seen all sides and I'm not so judgemental any longer. Everyone should go to their OB-GYN doctors immediately when they find out they're pregnant get the proper scam to get the proper blood test please life is not fair it can be very cruel and it's a horrible position to be put in as a pregnant mother, I can't imagine the Heartbreak. The Silver Lining is our babies will be there on the other side to greet us when our time comes. It's not goodbye we say forever, it's I will see you again.

Poor babies. They are so precious and it’s so tragic anything horrible happens to them.

I got curious to see if there were any documented cases of an older child with this syndrome, but it looks like life expectancy for these babies is 13 hours. Not one has lived more than a day. The parents who choose to carry these babies to term so that they can donate the organs to other babies, should be praised in the highest degree.

I knew someone who had a fetus diagnosed with this condition. She chose to have an abortion so that they wouldn't feel any pain. The disgust I felt at the stories of her having to deal with people judging her for that choice, especially considering her child was desperately wanted is one of the reasons I have a Pro-Choice position. She has to make a choice to spare herself and the baby incredible pain and no one should have been involved except for her and her doctor.

Forcing an infant with a fatal deformity or condition to live a very short, painful, and scary life is pure evil in my eyes. Anyone who thinks otherwise should be forced to work a year in the NICU and talk to parents who have had to watch their own children suffer and die due to a lack of access to genetic testing and abortion care.

To ban or restrict abortion care anywhere is a disgrace, but especially in countries where we have all the technology, money, and professionals to perform them safely. It’s a smack in the face to everyone who doesn’t have access to this care due to a lack of medical professionals, safe healthcare practices, and proper prenatal care.

Alot of people here aren't listening properly, he said there's higher chances if the parents are related, not that this only comes from inbreeding 💀

Along with inbreeding and random mutation, there’s an entire group of plants (corn Lillie’s)that contain Cyclopamine which cause this defect in livestock (and people if a pregnant woman consumes the plant or milk from an animal which did. Same deal, it’s not compatible with life. I don’t know why people can feel that a woman should have to carry a non-viable pregnancy to term. My sisters bf had an infant born with no brain, she delivered it so that they could use the organs to save other infants (since organs have to match size along with blood type)

The amount of people who think mercy killing and murder are the same thing is terrifying

I had the experience of seeing such a baby. It was at a science medical lab. I was only in high school, but the experience left an impression. Now, as a mother, I can only imagine what the mother must have felt at seeing her child. 😢

People should have to visit Pathology Museums so they can understand all the mistakes that happen in nature.

This is why people with no medical knowledge or training shouldn’t decide what medical actions are to be done.

There's actually more evidence that the idea of cyclopses came from Elephant skulls than from this disorder, since cyclopses in mythology were giants, though It's possible the disorder worked it's way into mythology somehow, like many tend to do.
