"Fall to ruin" like literally

Karsus didn't invent the spell out of obsession with magic alone, there were magic eating monsters that were threating the empire he used the spell out of desperation, the message about the risk of ambition is still there though.

He did indeed try to steal Mystryl’s magic, but it wasn’t only her magic that Karsus tried to steal. He tried to steal her very divinity and become the new God of Magic.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

Just to add, the spell is known as Karsus' Avatar and it doesn't just steal magic from a god, it makes you temporarily *become* that God, essentially taking their place in divinity.

It's more that they were fighting magic eating monsters called Phaerimm and Karsus though gaining the power of a god was a good idea. The main problem is he picked Mystra who was the god stable magic and without her watching over the laws of magic the magic became unstable.

Also they learned magic from sharns who are elves corrupted by chaos magic from an ancient empire.

Thanks for this. Haven't had time to catch up on Forgotten Realms lore, so these are a great help!

Another Tower of Babel allegory, it's like trying to shortcut the system to a level comparable to divinity is always the fast track to raining doom and ruin on your entire lot.

Netheril was at war with a race known as the phaerimm, a race that consumed magic and threatened to destroy the land. So Karsus cast his spell in a last ditch effort to defend the empire of Netheril. But he underestimated the amount of mental control he needed. And so the cataclysm known as Karsus's Folly happened. Destroying the Netheril empire, but burying the Phaerimm.

When you did the Atropal short you mentioned the negative energy plane. I never heard of this plane before. Can you do a video or short about it?

You really gotta tell some shorts about some of the characters within forgotten realms more, they’re always so interesting

I’m always up for some of xanathar or Elminster

The Ironic part of Karsus’ Folly is that if he had chosen literally any other god it would’ve been fine. But because he chose Mystra, you know the goddess of magic at the time, she had the awareness and reaction time to kill herself before the spell took hold, causing the spell to backfire and transform Karsus in a giant, perpetually bleeding stone. Well as the literally downfall of his entire civilization. Mr. Rhexx had a great video about the spell, being the only 11th level spell in existence to be cast.

I want to see a video on Carthisis' Folly, the Divinity Stealing Spell, and what actually happened to this spell after the casting was ultimately stopped.

After the new God of magic came back she limited the level of magic mortals could use so this could never happen again

Im not super knowledgeable on D&D lore but I remember hearing as a result, the goddess of magic inhibited the ability of mortals to cast level 12 magic and above to prevent a later cataclysmic event.
