How to FORMAT External Hard Drive for MAC

preview_player
Показать описание
Before using an external hard drive on a Mac, you should format it using Disk Utility.

This ensures that you will have a compatible hard drive with your computer.

To Format an external hard drive on Mac, all you have to do is plug in your hard drive and launch disk utility. Then you want to choose to erase within disk utility.
Make sure you choose Mac OS Journaled Extended when setting up your new drive.

The USB-C Lacie drive I mentioned can be found here. (Amazon Affiliate Link)

I have an external drive that worked for Mac and PC and I bumped the USB cable on the Mac whilst transferring some files which completely corrupted it - The odd thing was though I was still able to use it on the PC but it could never mount on the Mac

I used the PC to completely reformat it and although it now mounts on the mac for the PC part of the drive I'm still locked out of the Mac side and my 2TB drive is effectively 1.4 TB

How do I completely Nuke the whole drive and reset it like new so that I can access the full 2 TB? Do I need to go back to the PC or can I do it on the Mac?

Clear, helpful and easy. Thanks for explaining both options, as well as TIme Machine option. I actually AM using the drive for TM for extended periods away from home, so I did that - but would follow your steps otherwise.

Subscribed! would you recommend this method with an external hd that is advertised as formatted for PC? Will it still show up in Disk Utilities?
