Id almost say they are essential for the the reasons you mentioned and a whole lot more. For the sake of 10 dollars you should pick one up! Of course it helps but you dont need to know ohms law to get value from a multimeter.

I think I need a multimeter but don't know why, or how to use it.
I'm guessing it's handy for checking connections and values and if resistors and capacitors are lessening current correctly, but do I need to know stuff like ohms law to understand it all, and do pedal kits tell you how much current you should get at different stages of a circuit?
