i made this map over a year ago, my first foray into making an escape map actually, and its definitely not a super great escape room (as shown by lots of cheese), but it's still absolutely insane that you played it. i'm glad you had fun with it :)

What's even more funny about this map, is as soon as you got a single bamboo and a dirt, you could have grown as much bamboo as you want and create as much ladders as you want 😁

Don't feel bad that you might have "Cheated" or cheesed it. Like you said yourself, you were following the rules as written, outside of that is on the map maker for not ensuring you can't do certain things.

That end section was much easier than what you did. You can just tower with end rods. Even without that, the ladder could be placed 1 block lower and you still could have gotten up. Nice job finding the unintended escape though!
