Great News! Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in Fairford announces Vulcan XH558 will be at 2015 show
The Vulcan is the first aircraft announcement for this summer's event and organisers have said it is a perfect fit with their 'securing the skies - past, present and future' theme.
Lindsey Vonn
Vulcan To The Sky Trust chief executive Robert Pleming said: "We are really delighted to return XH558 to such a prestigious event on the aviation calendar." Vulcan XH558 will fly into the show on Friday, July 17 and will then be on static display as part of a 'pit' experience where visitors get the chance to get up close.

Then on the weekend, July 18-19, the aircraft will soar into the skies above RAF Fairford and perform in the flying display.

During Red Flag at Nellis AFB, our three C-130's were parked right next to the runway. Their flight crews and us techs were watching as four Vulcans came in for landing. Each one was riding their majestic wheelies far down the runway before finally making the lightest kiss with the front landing gear. It was really impressive, especially when compared to the way our C-130s usually come slamming down like a fat pig. (but that is their job; short take-offs and landings) The flight crews heard us making that sort of comparison and they all said they could land while riding a long wheelie too, and they would do it on the next flight.

Later that day they took off on their mission, and instead of heading back to the hotel, we stuck around to await their return and see if they were really going to do it. And sure enough, when they came back, the first 130 to land made a decent go of it, but didn't have much grace or height to his short wheelie. The next one came in and I guess the pilot really wanted to impress and he touched down the rear landing gear with the nose so high that he scraped the tail. There were avionics boxes there throwing huge sparks and debris. The final 130 was diverted to another runway, because now we all had to go out and do a FOD walk (FOD = Foreign Object Debris) up and down the runway so none of it would damage other aircraft.

All Flight and Ground crews from our base had to attend a "Come to Jesus" meeting the next day where we all got yelled at pretty good. But it was worth it. I'll never forget the beautifully graceful landings of the Vulcans and how they inspired our C-130 crews to attempt the same thing. And that attempt is something that will probably never be seen again.

I can remember seeing these flying to and from RAF Spadeadam training ranges from the Solway Firth. This was in the build up to their fantastic campaign in 82
