The true origin of Boxing Day is that apprentices would visit the homes and businesses of regular customers with a box into which money would be placed; the box anonymised the amount given. Written on the outside of the box would be "To Insure Promptness", later abbreviated to "TIP".

I miss boxing day in Australia.. it's always HUGE and I love it! I'm living in the States so the Xmas period is not as exciting anymore without it.

It saddens me that Boxing Day has turned from a day to help the disadvantaged, to a day where corporate greed reigns.

For years in Johannesburg the municipal rubbish collectors would knock on doors asking for their "christmas box" from around mid December and most people would grumblingly give them money. The practice ended about 15 years back when hordes of people started impersonating the rubbish collectors demanding christmas boxes in a way that was more intimidation than request. The municipality now forbids the practice although with their constant strikes and practice of trashing the city as a negotiating tactic I don't think anyone would give anything to them anyway.

I have been told that it is called Boxing Day because it's the day after Christmas, whereupon receiving new gifts, you may feel able and more free to box up their older counterparts and donate them to the needy!

I am an idiot. I thought after all these days that boxing day was a day where Canada had the sport of boxing all day. And they watched it on TV. At my old age, you still learn something new!

Thanks. I always wondered what that was all about.

Here in America, Christmas is basically Christmas and Boxing Day merged together, but heavily commercialized.
