Hey Michael. To get the same kind of flexibility in AE as the full particle simulator in HitFilm 2 Ultimate (not the simpler, quick-3D smoke trail effect that Ryan uses in his review) you'd need to get an extra plug-in like Trapcode Particular. A great plug-in, to be sure, but it costs the same as the whole of HitFilm.

I have HitFilm Ultimate but not the new version and I love it. The keying is as good as anything, it has motion tracking simular to AE's and is pretty affordable. The stock effects are as good as you make them. They're basic, but nice. But as demonstrated in the video here, a little tweeking goes a long way and the effects can be 3D. Their muzzle flashes are awesome. If you ever had FXLab or VisionLab, you know that. FXHome made a muzzle flash plug in for AE awhile back.

hey ryan you can isntall "particle illusion" for after effects. it also has many setting options in smoke or muzzle flash.

Wait, does After Effects and/or Premiere have these types of effects/particles generation? I use both, but it's not something I've found. I mostly use Action Essentials pack, but those are video clips, not CGI effects.

I have express, and you drop the full particle simulator and some 3D model import + camera solving. However, you still get loads of presets and a full 3d compositing environment, so it's a great low budget stepping stone.

As an avid Hitfilm user, I'm glad that you will or might be in the future, covering Hitfilm along in some of your tutorials. Like you said, Hitfilm is not a replacement for Adobe Premiere, so sometimes your tutorials are not always helpful for me.
