Slow motion Bumble Bee flight

This is one of my favorite bee shots. You can watch the way the feet move against the movement of the wings. I am working on a new bee series that will be a short film, 20 minutes or so on bees. When you shoot insects like I do you start to see personalities in (some) individuals. It is very amazing and of course more so in slow motion! ;)

It would be interesting if some fine talcum powder or particles could be injected into the air stream so the airflow pattern can be studied. It would have to be very carefully done so as to not disrupt or disturb the bee.

Old story tells that according to the laws of aerodynamics that fat bee could not fly, but as the bee doesn't know that, she flies anyway..
The truth is that only the dimension of the wings was taken in consideration that time (the "legend" come from the early '900), while a part of the job is done by those patterns on the wings, that make the air flow differently, allowing the bumble bee to fly ;)

Very nice video with a lot of details. Would it be posssible to make the black parts a litle bit lighter with Adobe After Effects, in order to see more details?

Thank you for your comment. When shooting Macro the depth of field is so shallow that both wing tips are out of focus while the body of the bee is in the focal sweet spot. Additionally there is some motion blur on the wings due to their high speed movement. with more light we can get better depth of field and or use a faster shutter speed to reduce the motion blur. Oh yes with a little more light we can cook the bee in as it crosses thru the beam.Just saying there are a lot of issues in shooting
