As someone who has a child with a mental disorder that has caused more than a few days where both my wife and I question our sanity and our ability to raise the rest of the kids... I sympathize with you greatly.

Always take the time you need to deal with the mental and physical exhaustion. It can be very difficult to live with someone you love, in a situation where you have little control, and approach bed knowing tomorrow you will still be in the same situation, trying to find out ways to express love and not the little internal rage monster that always wants to come out :D

I found late last year, when life felt like it was spinning out of control as I went into surgery... life doesn't get much easier, but it can get better! Someday, hahaha.

Thank you Gary for your open spech about your family, your struggle and your open mind. A few weeks ago i found your channel, i am impressed how friendly you explain your knowledge and you animated me to start from basics to learn as much as i am able to to learn much about freeBSD. I am entushiast from opensense, which is based on freeBSD.
The last 25 Years i am struggling from time to time with my mental handycap, i have manic-depressive Disorder since this long time. You are a big Inspiration for me, i just want to say thank you from deep of my heart. My thoughts are with you and your family. with love from Switzerland. Daniel

"The free loaders" were the people who use and support Redhat's product from the beginning to help make it a success.

Most software developers (AFAIK) contributing to Fedora Linux, are employees of RedHat.

The real problem isnt just the pay wall. It's the fact that they will cancel your subscription if you redistribute the software which is a violation of the GPL.

One minor point I think this situation allows to be made:

GPL is what protects the FOSS community here. It gives us an argument, it is the rock we can stand on. Selling GPL code and then revoking licenses you've sold when someone uses the rights provided to them by GPL is shakey legal ground for Redhat at best.

But you know what's been happening the last decade. Every product PM and developer advocate told every man and their dog with an amazing library, they didn't need the GPL. GPL is awkward, it's outdated. It's what spooty neckbeard linux losers use. Go use MIT, BSD, etc, just make it easier for everyone! The cool kids use permissive licenses so *everyone* can use your code.

Well we're just starting to see the fruits of that labour now, 10-15 years since that became common place. Google is quietly dampening the FOSSness of the Android project, bit by bit. See L.Rossman's recent video on them deprecating the FOSS dialer and messages code. They even have a project to replace the kernel (project fuschia), although who knows if they'll succeed with that. Now Redhat would like to lock away their whole distro. Projects like MongoDB and ElasticSearch have found out first hand how a permissive license goes when Amazon would like to "adapt" your product for their services.

Stallman can be a bit of a dick a lot of the time, but damn can he also be eventually correct about a lot of things as well.

I've moved to FreeBSD but I never had an issue purchasing a Linux system. I paid for Mandrake/Mandriva until 2011. And I also purchased 3 versions of the new Linspire when it was released and the two following versions. The GPL has always allowed for pay walling your software. And in regard to calling users free loaders it's hypocritical considering that Linux is a GNU free loader if you want to put things in those terms.

This is what redhat is. SystemD is REDHAT too but we go against systemD THEY always tell us: "i don't get the contrversy between systemD and other init systems"
guess we were right...

Even I have small subs in YT. I still have other video platform and private peers and networks too. I'm was disappointed.

I've been contemplating this whole situation with Red Hat. I have concluded that the driving force behind this shift is coming from IBM. The people at Red Hat are simply doing what they have to do to keep their jobs. The economic situation in the United States has resulted in massive lay-offs of IT workers. This is hardly a good time to find yourself unemployed in that industry.

IBM use to be the king of the computer world before the advent of the personal computer and Microsoft. All of their software is closed source. I doubt that the leaders of IBM understand open source or how it works. They understand closed source. Their company was built around closed source software. The arguments we are hearing from Red Hat are the arguments made in favor of closed source software. McGrath is a face whose job it is to sell this to the open source community. IMO, he is the fall guy. He will be the one they blame for this whole situation and he will be fired. Never mind that he did what he was told to do by his superiors. That's what I think.
