All Red Hat had to do was stop talking and the problem would eventually go away, the problem is nobody ever stops talking and every time they do the RHEL problem only keeps getting worse and worse

If Red Hat doesn't like the FOSS way of doing things, maybe they should make their own OS instead of using freely distributed software as their product base.

Linus should update the Linux kernel license to read, ..."except Redhat. They have to pay for this."😅

"oi m8, don't rebuild our code for free" "oh you mean the code that you're copying for free?"
"oi m8, don't repackage our stuff for money" "oh you mean like 98% of your repackaged stuff you got for free?"
I will have one cup and one pipe filled to the brim with whatever red hat is drinking and smoking please.

The point of the CentOS free rebuilds increasing sales is that if people run CentOS at home then businesses are more likely to run RHEL because then they can hire people experienced with CentOS to manage their RHEL systems.

As a software engineer and FOSS contributor myself, the only reason I ever used CentOS and any of these RHEL clones is to support actual RHEL installations. Otherwise I'm not really willing to spend time and especially not money to make it work. I'm with Jeff Geerling on this one - if Red Hat doesn't support us so we can support them, we're just not going to support them. But anyway, the writing was on the wall ever since IBM bought Red Hat. None of this is really surprising.

Does anyone remember when IBM made the IBM P/S 2 with a proprietary MCA bus and ended up losing all their PC marketshare?

I can't believe they're literally still running the same late 80s playbook that cost them billions in losses.

Just checked RHEL prices. For $180 / year you get a workstation No-support-from-RedHat licence. Not even a web portal. What are they thinking ?

The only good thing that could come out of it is people migrating to Debian. I have a feeling that the corpo-distros are about to "close-source", "paywall", restrict, etc. open source software. The community will have to fight a lot of defensive battles from now on.

Microsoft becoming a Linux distributor, RHEL going closed source, Reddit dies, Meta joining the Fediverse.

What weird times to be alive.

I wonder how many people started out their Linux journey on Raspberry Pi, and then migrated to Debian because of similarity, "mind share" as qlum said.

10:30 RHEL comes with tools to deploy, manage, monitor, evaluate 1000s of servers, software server and package lifecycles, integration with virtual and cloud infrastructure, problem support and a knowledgebase that CentOS simply cannot provide. This is the value-added part that everyone seems to miss when answering the question "why buy RHEL when there is CentOS?". Many organizations want the ability to call someone 24/7 when things go wrong and provide immediate SME support.

I have a sliver of sympathy for RedHat here. They make a *product* and then somebody else (Oracle, Amazon, probably Microsoft) goes and clones it, bug-for-bug, as their own, under their own brand.

I think that this could have been resolved in a much less disruptive way, though.

Alright. Time to fork Debian and sell ‘Deb Hat’ support contracts :)

RedHat and IBM both know how OpenSource and the GPL work. They knew this before getting into the distro making business. To now complain about the very same community and ecosystem they built RHEL from is disingenuous and merely corporate greed. Their next steps will be to start introducing non-GPL / non-FOSS applications to their distribution, replacing the GNU and GPL applications and binaries to make the distro just proprietary enough so they can start suing competitors. They are going to be the next SCO, this is only the beginning.

They're right though. Still I feel like the source code itself is not their main product, they sell a service. That's definetly not getting them any new customers or money, so what that might mean in truth is that they dial back on how much they contribute at all, since they pay people to work on it and get nothing in return.

The problem is people don’t see the reality: open source is not a philosophy it is a business model

Taking a step back. What is RedHat selling to customers? I assume it is support and packaging? Back in the 90s I was hired by a company to take freely available source and build it into a hardware package with customer interface. The company sold the hardware + support. This was on BSD.

Re: Your point about selling iPhones. Yes, your average user is going to buy the cheaper iPhone from the guy out front. But major businesses aren't. They're going to buy the Apple version, even though it's much more expensive. Because it comes with a warranty and full support. Then, they're going to hire people who sold/became experts on those cheaper iPhones to manage their Apple iPhones. This happens all the time in the Linux world. Tons of Linux folks grew up on CentOS or other distributions. Not all of them came from RH specifically.
