So, my town has gone through a few lettuce shortages and I simply can't be without a weekly dose of Caesar salad. Because of this, I've had to learn how to regrow romaine lettuce with the bottom end of the head of a store bought lettuce. Here's how to do It:

Step 1: buy a head of romaine lettuce and cut it off a few inches from the base
Step 2: take the bottom end, or 'scrap', and put it in a short glass and put about 1/2 an inch to an inch of water into the glass
Step 3: put it somewhere bright! You want to make sure it gets at least 6 hours of sun, but you also don't want it to get too hot otherwise it will wilt.
Step 4: Change the water every 1-2 days. In this video, I was pretty diligent about changing the water every day for the first week, after that I only changed it every other day.
Step 5: Watch it grow over the next 10-14 days. Make sure it doesn't run out of water!
Step 6: Plant it! Once there are plenty of new leaves at the top and multiple roots that have grown at least an inch long. For this video, I could have planted the lettuce on either the 12th, 13th or 14th day. Once it gets to this stage, don't wait too long to plant it.

Let me know if this worked for you in the comments below!

When you said "Romaine calm!" I literally said out loud.. Okay okay okay okay. I'm waiting for the info to flow and here you are being charmingly ridiculous. I'm working on taking control of my produce and I learned Romaine can be replanted. I'm so stoked to learn this and yours is the video I found. Thanks for posting.

We've been keeping romaine scraps from Costco for a few weeks now, and none seem to have sprouted roots. They're all making lovely new leaves, but I wonder if there's anything I can do to encourage root growth. So far, I've not seen a single root. I'll probably try romaine from another store next time.

Do you completely bury it in soil ? Or leave the new growth above soil?

What about the nutrients? Does it come from the mother scrap you put in the water? I thought all plants get them from the soil. So what soil did you use? Do you have to use compost?

What if you're not seeing roots after a few weeks? The lettuce has grown, but no roots. Should you keep it in water? Or is it okay to transfer to soil anyway?

I'd love to see what they looked like after you planted them, and learn your tips for that planting. I'm planning to plant mine in pots and put them outside, would enjoy your input about that... what size pots, can I plant more than one in each pot, how long can I expect them to yield edible leaves, etc. Thank you for the video, it was adorable and very informative!

When you plant in soil, do you plant as deep as the bottom of the new leaves or what?

My guinea pigs and rabbits will thank you! The walnut trees completely wiped out my piggy garden this year and produce has been very poor in quality as of lately.

Really funny and very helpful. Once planted and you start taking leaves will it keep growing? One more question....where did you get that amazing scarf. Thank and stay safe.

I have done this and gotten to lettuce to the planting point, but after I put it in the soil, it died. Any suggestions?
