So, my town has gone through a few lettuce shortages and I simply can't be without a weekly dose of Caesar salad. Because of this, I've had to learn how to regrow romaine lettuce with the bottom end of the head of a store bought lettuce. Here's how to do It:
Step 1: buy a head of romaine lettuce and cut it off a few inches from the base
Step 2: take the bottom end, or 'scrap', and put it in a short glass and put about 1/2 an inch to an inch of water into the glass
Step 3: put it somewhere bright! You want to make sure it gets at least 6 hours of sun, but you also don't want it to get too hot otherwise it will wilt.
Step 4: Change the water every 1-2 days. In this video, I was pretty diligent about changing the water every day for the first week, after that I only changed it every other day.
Step 5: Watch it grow over the next 10-14 days. Make sure it doesn't run out of water!
Step 6: Plant it! Once there are plenty of new leaves at the top and multiple roots that have grown at least an inch long. For this video, I could have planted the lettuce on either the 12th, 13th or 14th day. Once it gets to this stage, don't wait too long to plant it.
Let me know if this worked for you in the comments below!
