Consciousness, a Quantum Physics Perspective

Renowned quantum physicist, John Hagelin (PhD, Harvard), presents the thesis that consciousness is a unified field that contains nature's programming code and transcending through meditation is a pathway to hack / access consciousness.

“If quantum mechanics hasn’t profoundly shocked you, you haven’t understood it yet. Everything we call real is made of things that cannot be regarded as real.” – Niels Bohr, a Danish Physicist

I love this guy... I've known about TM for quite a few years, but I only discovered John Hagelin's lectures over the past few days, and I am very impressed with his lucidity, energy, and fundamental knowledge of both reality and the-self (one and the same from a certain point of view).

Enjoyed the beginning of the video but then I started getting this weird feeling that this guy is a salesman or paid social marketer. The red flag came up when we were shown the graphs with claims about the branded "TM" instead of the more generic "Deep Meditation". Follow the money on this guy. Shame on Stanford.

From Dr. Max Planck, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist who discovered quantum theory: "I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness."-The Observer (25 January 1931)

the idea that consciousness exists at the smallest, most fundamental, reduced level of physics is quite an assumption. It is just as likely to be an emergent property only visible at the systems level, i.e. a property the comes from the connections between parts of the brain. For instance, you wouldn't say Microsoft Word truly 'exists' at the level of a computer's hardware, since it appears the same whether on a mac or pc, but that it emerges from computer code as a higher level, abstract idea.

I  dropped from a MS program top most US university  after booking tickets to US partly due to inner call, went on to study at a top indian university where similar stuff was core part of curriculum. I made it core of my values, but belief in these values (money and success is not everything, altruism till infinity is the one thing to live for) was always swayed during tougher times. Heartening to see likes of stanford atleast partly considering these values and ideals..

no quantum physics in here, just a transcendental meditation salesman.

Magic mushroom produces the same hyper connectivity state just like deep meditation... here you go. You can thank me later.

He mentions quantum theory from time to time. He has an inverted pyramid diagram that he compares to this statement that looks like it's going down a funnel. His use of neural imaging is plain wrong. He gives me no reason to believe his use of EEG is any better. What does this have to do with quantum physics other than he can kinda make it look parallel by imposing arbitrary levels of similarity, which for some reason cannot be identified in English, only Sanskrit(?). Meditation is incredibly healthy, but this guy makes it sound like complete bullshit.

More and more I see universities like Stanford giving time to non-Western, non-scientific traditions because they want to show their open-mindedness, but they don't know how to filter the snake oil salesmen from the people who genuinely have something to teach. This guy gave us a sales pitch. It was not founded on quantum physics. Despite all his graphics, he did not present evidence as a basis for these benefits. Evidence transcends. There is tons of evidence out there regarding the benefits of meditation, but he didn't present anything to connect it to quantum physics other than "Look at my cool diagram!"

All the narrow minds attacking the content of this video are deathly afraid of having their simplistic world view destroyed by those who accept higher thought.

From his Wikipedia article:

John Samuel Hagelin (born June 9, 1954) is the leader of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) movement in the United States. He is president of the Maharishi University of Management (MUM) in Fairfield, Iowa, and honorary chair of its board of trustees. The university was established in 1973 by the TM movement's founder, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, to deliver a "consciousness-based education".

Hagelin graduated in physics in 1981, and began post-doctoral research at the CERN for less than a year, then at the SLAC. He vanished in 1983 in the midst of personal problems and reappeared a year later as physics professor at the Maharishi University of Management (MUM), then became its president. Hagelin believes that his extended version of unified field theory is identified with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's "𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙙 𝙛𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨", 𝙖 𝙫𝙞𝙚𝙬 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙗𝙮 "𝙫𝙞𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙤𝙧𝙚𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙝𝙮𝙨𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙".

Consciousness is associated with “Thinking” and is independent of “Thinking”.
This thought is understood only by Consciousness.

This should have a different title such as "Meditation, and its benefits".

Unbelievable all the negative comments below, you obviously don't know anything about the systems of eastern philosophy (phenomenological description of consciousness). And are so limited to an exclusive view from a western physics perspective. Hagelin is the ONLY Serious Field Theorist who knows its ancient philosophy, east and west will synthesize in the unified theory, the conceptual ontological framework of ancient scriptures is helpful. They talk about the same thing but using different words and ways of describing.

I have read Bhagwat Geeta and Shrimad Bhagwat Puran and I can observe that many things that are discussed in this video are already described in this Vedic Literatures. I recommend all to read them.

Where Buddhism is concerned, there is no such thing as a universal consciousness.

The Upanishads, where the Bhagavad Gita is part of, is not earlier than Early Buddhism. At best it is contemporary with Early Buddhism, and probably a reaction of the Vedic Brahmans to the ideas of the Sramana movement that Jainism and Buddhism belongs to. That would explain why a number of ideas in the Upanishads are contradictory to the Vedas. Yogic meditations were used by Sramanas and not by Vedic Brahmans.
