Crews remain on scene after 12 homes damaged in landslide in Rolling Hills Estates

A massive landslide forced the evacuation of a dozen homes in a Los Angeles County neighborhood late Saturday night, and police, fire and utility company officials were on scene as early as 6 a.m. Sunday morning with the area completely closed off.

Portuguese Bend Landslide: This area of Rolling Hills Estates sits just west of the Portuguese Bend Landslide. This is a naturally occurring ancient landslide that is ACTIVE. It moves EVERY YEAR with the last big one in 1956.

This is completely the fault of the City and homeowners for choosing to build near a landslide. Insurance companies were smart to bail on this area and not take risk excluding landslide in their coverage.

LA County BOS Janice Hahn is complicit. She grew up in Rolling Hills and knows this area is landslide prone. Yet earlier this year, she allocated millions of dollars away from poorer neighborhoods in LA County to fund a beautification project for exactly 23 wealthy homeowners in this area to increase their property value. This project involves drilling, digging and earth/soil disturbance/removal, all things that can trigger a landslide.

These are very pricey homes; not sure if the homeowners insurance will cover this. Years ago, wife and I used to drive in the Portuguese Bend area nearby. The land was so unstable that certain homes were on I beams to allow the ground to shift underneath. In addition. the pipes carrying water, sewage, etc. were above ground along side the roadway.
