I just died in my hardcore world and lost a mansion I built, full diamond armor, and decent stuff. word of the wise. get the feather falling 4 enchantment on your boots as soon as possible. once you get decent armor dying from mobs is less likely than accidentally falling into a pit. especially in the nether.

However you can also include the following tips:
Before you go mining underground, consider looking around your base for any high mountains or jagged peaks. These usually contain a TON of exposed iron and coal.

Also consider making a small wheat, cow and sugarcane farm because it will provide you with books necessary for enchanting and food as well.

Usually after you make a make-shift base, you should go on a mob killing spree. (Kill pigs, cows and sheep so you can get tons of food before you go mining.)

These are some tips that might help a new player.

Mining in mountains is the best way to get tons of coal and iron. Both ores generate a lot at very high elevations

My first time playing hardcore, I found a coal vein that was around 64-32. I was set with coal. :)
