And here i thought the thunderbird was a car! Some YT vid speculated that it's actually a cultural memory of one of the enormous raptors that previously inhabited the Americas. Idk if condors are raptors, but there used to be some massive condors. California condor is pretty big but the legend seems to imply the thunderbird behaved more like a raptor. Like our very own Hapst Harst? eagle. Whatever that giant raptor is called the one from NZ that definitely ate at least one small human. The raptor that would swoop down dive bomb the giant flightless moa and stun it, then further incapacitate and/or kill it with massive 3" long talons.
If a modern human saw a 20 to 30 lbs raptor wirh its 12 to 15' wingspan, they'd freak out. Especially if the damn thing dive bombed an unsuspecting dog or tee ball coach or fisherman or heck, even a 220 lb whitetail buck. The hunter watching this slaughter unfold thinks back to how in the previous season they had watched a buck run for a mile after being shot in the chest just bc the round had missed the lungs heart or spinal column. Meanwhile the thunderbird had demonstrated better aim, crippling the animal with its blow by fracturing several vertebrae. Now the hunter stands there frozen in horror as the bird begins to eat the poor deer while it attempts - and fails - to fight off the bird or crawl away while being eaten alive. Those talons have a grip like humans can't imagine.

Ok. I had to research this because I saw a 50-by-220 foot Super Thunderbird. No joke. No kidding. It took my brain more than a year to comprehend. "Oh well, it's one of those days." Only, I've never seen anything out of the ordinary that wasn't in the Christian supernatural. I think I had a psychological protection effect like "Mr Magoo." "You are a big fellow. Aren't you?" In this research .. reptile for initial size, dinosaur for increased size and some volume, and mammal for increased volume. Energy is chasing organic mass into a size-and-volume scramble. First attempts with reptile gave us the pterosaurs. Top among this genera was the Quetzalcoatlus at an enormous size. These overlaped with the dino period. JW3. In the Jurassic, Nature put wings on raptor/dinosaur to get farther up the size scale. This was the whole reason for the dino species. So, there is a reptile class and an eagle class of "thunderbird" but better stated as "large cryptozoology bird" with reptile-class and eagle-class. This is important because the eagle class can blast once (seen on cave walls and told in legends) and blast twice in "wild speciation" to "tortoise-and-hare" into the largest size-wise fauna. ("Blasting" may be a product of the time-born movement of our solar system in space and time. The "math equation" knew this.) My aunt was sick this was before i was born, my dad came home from a night out or work i forget but it was around the 80s early 80s and he drove back to the farmland down south in texas. He pulled up to the tractor shed and then he saw a giant black bird come out of there and he chased it down and off the property in his truck and then it vanished. My aunt was sick the drs thought it was scarlett fever but that next day she walked out of her room healthy as can be. I believe he saw this crpytid.

I doubt it was a prehistoric reptile (pteranodon),
Though depending on how old the legends are, it might be a large vulture/eagle species or argentavis (a huge prehistoric bird)

My grandpa said that he saw a giant bird that flew over his building and it screeched very loud and it look to him like 18 ft wide wing span and I know when my grandpa is lying and he wasn’t lying!
