6 Months With The Tudor Black Bay 58 925: Review Loves/Hates & Tarnish Update: Trouble In Paradise?

The Tudor BB58 925 was released about six months ago and it immediately polarized the watch world. It has continued to be a talking point even after the latest release of the full bronze Black Bay 58 and the ceramic Black Bay. However, the circumstances were not ideal because the continued discussion was because of the tarnish that has formed on multiple 925s around the world.

Today we finally take a look at what my BB58 925 looks like after six months of use and how the tarnish has progressed since the last update three months ago. The changes are not extreme however they are impactful in that they have made me think about my future with the 925 despite my original excitement about the tarnish. We will go over my reservations when I take a look at what I’ve loved about the watch while owning it and also what I didn't love as much now that I’ve spent time with it. However, no matter what happens it will remain one of the most unique watches on the market with no equivalents from the likes of Rolex, Omega, or Seiko on the more affordable end of the spectrum.

If you’d like to learn more about the Black Bay 925 take a look at my Tudor Tarnish Tales playlist! I take a look at the 925 for what it is beyond the controversy that has surrounded the tarnish. What is it like to live with on a daily basis? How comfortable is it compared to a steel Balck bay 58? How does it wear on different straps? Would I buy the watch if I had a chance to redo everything?

Background for the video: The advantages of silver include a warm and bright white color (especially with the fully brushed case), and additional heft to make the watch feel more special. However, silver’s main disadvantage is the fact that it oxidizes and tarnishes. Tarnishing is still one of the biggest concerns about the 925 and for good reason. Tudor said that it created a brand new alloy to fend off tarnishing, but the results are something only time could provide. However, one month after buying the 925, I got some answers because my 925 did start to tarnish and more reports of tarnishing came up as well. Now we wait and see how the tarnishing will progress.

Good video. I'm now more convinced that I do not like tarnishing on a watch. I realize some folks like the "aged' look. But it just looks a little dirty to my less-sophisticated eyes. However, I am interested in seeing far much more tarnishing will be achieved. I say, yes wear it in the pool. Wear it everywhere. It would be great to see what it looks like in another 6 months.

Conclusion : silver does tarnish. Not really a surprise.

Nice try from Tudor, but maybe a standard stainless steel Black Bay with grey dial and grey bezel would be the best option.

Thank you!!! I almost purchased this yesterday, fell in love immediately. Glad I didn't purchase it. I love the cool tones of the watch and would be bummed if it tarnished to warm. Such a bummer, the bright silver is striking and the overall design of the watch is beautiful.

Thanks to your channel I pulled the trigger on a blackbay 58 black about 3 weeks ago. I absolutely love it. Since then, it hasn't left my wrist. Through mangroves, rain forest trekking, pool and sea swims, kayaking and snorkeling, it hasn't missed a beat. Thanks so much for convincing me to get it!!

This has become my grail watch recently. I own a LOT of silver, some of it covered in (tiny LOL) diamonds and I have grown to absolutely love the natural change over time. None of it has changed color like that, even with my oily skin but I would still really like to add the 925 to my collection as my “let’s wear the nice stuff today” watch, and see it change with skin contact and daily wear. Glad to see how yours is doing!

It is tempting as i have a silver celtic cross. The dark patina and polished areas look great. Would consider engraving celtic patern on the sides to use the patina.

The trouble with having a silver watch bracelet is silver being softer than steel would be with the links stretching and wear great review you have saved me I was thinking of getting one but that silver is tarnish is always going to be a problem for me 👍

I'm a four months behind you in the tarnish tales. Still honeymooning over it, although I see your point about the warm/cool clash. I've been wearing it most days, and my main "complaint" is that silver is softer than steel. I knew that going in, but I'm a klutz and ding my watches on the reg. It picks up wee scratches and such more easily than steel. Still Loving it though. I agree that a blackish uniform tarnish would be awesome. Water and hot tubs??? I'll do some research... Also, if you decide to get it cleaned, store it with silica gel packs afterwards. It will absolutely minimize any tarnishing while stored. Great video as always!

From my own experience with non-watch objects made from 925 silver: Yeah... it absolutely will tarnish. Easy fix: Get a tin of Nevr Dull. Works like a charm on all sorts of metals/silverware for me.

My ownership of the 925( on Tudor nato ) has been six months now, my experience is…it has taken on a warm silver colour patina. I am very happy with this piece in my collection and surprised that it has not been in more demand. I guess the reason is everyone wants a bracelet and then accessorise with aftermarket straps & that would have been my preference too.
I have now put the 925 away for the winter months and moved on to enjoying the BB Chrono Opaline dial on bracelet for the dark mths ahead.
Looking forward to your next update.

I gotta say, I don't think this would bother me. It looks good, it's aged with you. I don't think Tudor should claim it won't tarnish but I think this takes on a better look than the bronze models.

The tarnish is awesome. Expected. Despite Tudor's words. Unsure what they were thinking making such silly statements. It's silver. Of course it'll tarnish. Part of the charm. Certainly on my Want List. Love it.

I got my BB 925 three months ago and when it comes to my watch there is no tarnishing at all. It looks like on the first day which really surprises me since I prepared myself mentally after watching your videos and reading the respective blogs for it to lose its look.
I would be interested to see what happens if you send it in! Another great video of yours!

Two choices: polish it regularly, OR (the better choice) let it develop a beautiful patina which will become a shiny gunmetal greyish-black: six months isn’t nearly long enough. In my experience take 18 months minimum. The middle point is admittedly pretty ugly.

Well, a case with 92.5% of silver in it was always going to tarnish, no matter what Tudor said about this alloy. But my biggest gripe with this version would be how easily it scratches, as silver is substantially softer than stainless steel. There's undeniably a "cool" factor about the silver and the bronze BB58, but the fact of the matter is that these are inferior alloys to 316L / 904L steel for watchmaking.
