I'm thinking maybe a $5 Harbor freight tarp over those machines might help just a little bit

The “weather” is not the problem, it is the failure to properly, responsibly protect them from the weather.

Probably wouldn't hurt to cover them🤔

I usually spray just a tad bit of starting fluid in my gas machine

Good God, that brings back memories of ironworking in the winter...

Nothing like having the generators and switches protected from the weather!!

Gas engines with carburators need 2 things in cold weather a old style light bulb on the carburetor and a electric oil dipstick to keep the oil warm help engine turn over faster.

I make it a habit to leave choke on after I'm through with previous use in case things freeze up and keep starting fluid handy. Good luck

Just curious, did he make sure the air intake was clear?

Never saw a Continental in good condition that wouldn't instantly burst to life in the most extreme cold.
...never saw one that would instantly burst to life in any weather, without opening the fuel valve first.

My gas gen/inverter from harbor freight started right up in -5F weather. Ran like a champ.

These machines have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Going to work with my dad in the summers in the mid 80’s, I’ll never forget the first time I worked on my first big time firing line was 1998 in superior, Wisconsin working for Gregory & Cook 30 miles 36”. I think there were 18 or 20 welders on that firing line and there’s no sound in the world like 20 sa-200’s cackling in unison it’s something you’ll never forget and it’s something you don’t see anymore unfortunately They’re getting too expensive when compared to other options.

I’d suggest building a barn wherever you park your truck. This is why when I look at homes it either has to have enough land to build a barn or barn included

Doors are a pretty important part of the machine. I know on my machine it’s important to pull the choke before you hit the button. I’ve got around 100 hours on my engine now and Gertrude is really welding good.

I keep my Bobcat 250 in the barn and mounted a crane on my flatbed. It takes five minutes to load the Bobcat and my gas air compressor onto my flatbed 4X4 Ranger. But I really would love to have an SA200. Especially one old enough to not have any computer boards .

I think there’s a short between the steering wheel & the drivers seat in the maintenance dept👍😂

How cold was it? How long since plugs, points carb job etc? Keep it in shape it should start down to -20c

If they use a battery then I'd suggest it's low starting RPMs b/c on modern engines the flooding can usually be flushed through the engine with more air. Upgrading & insulating your battery might be a more efficient improvement. Even the 10yr warranty batteries say that 8 discharges below 80% will shorten the lifespan of the battery.
